My 99 360 with 41k miles Modena has been in the shop for a while getting some misc stuff done. I tried getting it smoged before it went in but it didn't pass. I had my mechanic check it out while it was in there. He sent the ECU back to FNA and had it reflashed. Thought that would turn off the check engine light and fix the problem but it didn't. He pulled the Cats off and said they are at 75%. I'm picking the car up this week and need some help with this issue. I haven't tried the drive cycle yet but i'm not sure that will get rid of the check engine light. Does anyone know of a good smog guy? that can help me. I'm trying to do this legit. Thanks PS. I know its the pain in the butt 99 smog stuff. I'm hoping I don't have to replace the cats ;(

My mechanic said it was a mass air flow code. But he said that wasn't the problem. I think he tried replacing that. I'm picking the car up probably Tuesday. I'm going down to the DMV tomorrow and try and get a temporary registration so I can tackle the smog issue. The stereo was draining the battery so the battery was dying but that issue has been resolved

    Wayne,

If you are in HB, can you make it to Yorba Linda? Take 22 then 55 then 91 voila....
RMT is well known expert and I am positive he could help you. He helped me through last time I had trouble with SMOG. I killed the battery which triggered to erase everything so I went to get the SMOG Check, they could not read anything. It is different story but you should definitely check out. Google RMT and ask for Randy. Then Tell him Brian Yang referred. He is very honest and nice guy that so many people know and use him here.

If the mechanic sent in your ECM to be re-flashed, it sounds like your Monitors are not running to completion. In California all Monitors must run to completion and no Check Engine Light to pass Smog. The only Monitor that doesn't have to run to completion is the EVAP Monitor.

The Monitors are what set DTC's. For example, the Fuel System Monitor, which looks at Fuel Trims sets a Fuel System Lean/Rich DTC if the Fuel Trims get outta wack (roughly +/- 25%). The Fuel System Monitor is what is called a Continuous Monitor, it runs all the time. A Monitor such as a EVAP Monitor runs only under certain conditions or when enabling criteria are met. They are called Non-Continuous Monitors. I would suspect some of your Non-Continuous Monitors are not running to completion and that is your problem. The MAF DTC is set by the Comprehensive Component Monitor and that runs continuously so that is not the issue. A shop with experience in that issue is the place to go, don't go to a Smog only shop as they only test. Hope this helps.

I have a 99 in Cali and when it got here from Texas FNA had to replace the ecu'S with new ones. This was from the previous owner, i have the documentation, it said sent to FNA, could not be re flashed, New ECU's sent and installed.

It passes CA SMOG perfectly every time with no issues. Not sure why they had to replace the ecu's but they definitely did

thanks for the replies guys. I'm picking the car up Wed. I'm going to try the drive cycle process. I have a Code Reader so I think I can turn off the Check Engine. Hopefully with the cycle and a new battery I can straighten this out. I'll keep this post going and keep everyone posted. hopefully I won't have to replace the cats. I might have to bring it to a Pro if the drive cycle doesn't work

I assume the replaced them because something was wrong. I assume if FNA found something wrong or they couldn't reflash the ECU's they would have told me.

So you put a 2004 ECU in it or the dealer replaced yours with a 2004?

I got my car back and hooked up my OBDII Reader. It says P0103 code Mass Air Flow code. Check engine light is on. I turned the engine off and back on it comes back on with that code P0103 again. Sooo he tried different Mass Air Flow sensors. he even tried a new one.

Is there anything else that could be making it throw that code. He removed the cats and said they are at 75%. Could the cats be making throw that code?

    Wayne,

Go see Craig at Fastcars. They deal with this all the time. They are only 20 miles from HB. Most unsophisticated ODB readers will clear everything when you reset codes so don't do that especially if you have hard fought to get all the drive cycle monitors to set. Once you resolve the Pcode the MIL will often go out when enough OK cycles have passed. An SD will give extra data a generic reader cannot give. There are many Ferrari mechanics who do not have the SD. I always suspect wiring. It is amazing what refreshing connectors will do.
