Sorry for posting same again, but perhaps this is more appropriate forum section to ask about this ?
In my 20 or so years of going to Monterey for the car week I've never attended aforementiond event and was just wondering what is the allure of it ?
Based on (perhaps incorrectly?) reviews and photos I've seen in the past, along with constant bombardment of emails referring to yet another "sponsor" joining the line-up of others (yes I know, should just "unsubscribe"), its main purpose appears to be a huge marketing exhibition for variety of products and services.
Is it and if it is, why would I (or any spectator) be expected to pay entry for such ?
    Just curious.

Where there is glamorous girls, exotic cars, freshly arrived private jets, (and some classic planes) some classic cars but mostly just modern sports cars. Some appetizers. I'll admit they don't try to get the really rare ones like Quail or Pebble, it's more what we in the Sixties called a "happening." If you were introducing a buddy to the world of exotic cars that would be a good kick off event.

I'm with you. Been once, it's a party celebrating excess, superficiality and all the things (and people) those qualities bring. Not my bag.

I've gone almost every year. It has gotten a lot bigger than it used to be (and more expensive) and it's a good time. There is definitely some commercial aspects to it which I personally don't mind, you usually see some celebs there, and there is some pretty good food and drinks included with admission. My favorite part is the aeronautical aspect, I love planes almost as much as cars and the venue fits for that. It has become the official kick off for e week.

    Thanks for all your replies.
It sounds my assumption was fairly accurate and event is something I probably wouldn't enjoy enough to attend, even if free.
Kind of like that SEMA show, for which years ago I was getting invitations with room comps, etc from various vendors, but after going once with a friend who was building a race car at the time and always wanted to see the event, I soon realized it had very little, if anything to offer for (vintage car) guy like me. We walked through it all (& thanked my hosts along the way) but couldn't have been more relieved once we got out of there. Eventually I just requested to be removed from vendors invitation lists.
As for the technical advertisements or displays featuring scantly clad models or celebrities, I tend to view such tactics either as an attempt to cover or hide shortcomings of the product itself and/or more often, it's aim toward demographic target audience different than I.
