I'm finding myself thinking about selling my white 85 euro 308. It's a good reliable drivers car with all up to date services maintenance items done. The market seems alittle volatile to me though, a lot of cars in marketplace not moving. The only reason for selling would be to buy a plane of my own instead of renting. I'm not sure what to even start it out at. ?? Talk me out of it or tell me to go for it, opinions ?? Image Unavailable, Please Login

Gorgeous car, and a Euro too! Talk you out of it, ok...

Remember the wise adage "If it flies, floats, or f*cks, rent it" - well, an airplane flies, so it qualifies for the "rent it", but none of those 3 apply to your 308, so you should keep the 308 and rent your airplane time! :D

Don't do it! I had the same feeling when I owned my GTB QV, wasn't getting used much. Thought I wanted an airplane or possibly save and step up to a 360 coupe in a year or so. Only five months after selling it I realized what a mistake I had made. Spent the next year looking for my current Euro QV. You will regret the decision.

Gunner, If you fly a lot, don't rent. There are a lot of benefits to owning, but a few financial risks as well. Planes can make Ferrari's look like a bargain! Find a plane that fits your mission. I own a Piper Archer.
I have an '85 Euro as well. If I didn't drive it to the airport, I would hardly drive it at all:)
Hope you can find a way to have both toys.

If this is your first airplane owning experience, it is a lot less scary financially to get into a partnership with like-minded pilots. An annual inspection is so much more affordable divided three or four ways. And hangar rent and insurance....and reserve for engine rebuild...

If you do that, maybe you can keep your Ferrari?

Good luck with whatever you decide. Jeff

I will to keep it very simple here. I have a number of friends in the classic car restoration / auction business. This includes my son who works for the largest auction group as their research and information manager. We speak about classic cars a lot. Right now, the market has flattened off a bit, but the really good cars are still fetching very good prices and I believe they will start to pick up again soon. Having said that, where will you find another 308 as well fettled as yours, should you want one again? They do not make them anymore, and in my eyes, it is one of the nicest designs Ferrari have had. They may be faster cars, but the reaction you get from young people, on the street, every time they see it, says "Keep It!".

If your car can't talk which she is you're just not hearing it but I can.
She is saying "please don't sell me, I don't want to leave you"
I agree with the above suggestion, don't break up the relationship.

As you post this in the 308/328 section, it's in your heart that you want to keep it as you know most of us will talk you out of it. Do yourself a favour and keep the white beauty then thank yourself later :)

Thank you all for the comments. I think I will pursue finding a partnership and see where that takes me for now. Love driving,Love flying. Thank god everyday that I am in a position to ponder these decisions.

Also remember that it's always easier to sell than to buy because as a seller you have full control of the price as if you were to buy, you don't have any control specially when you find the car of your dream.

    Joe,

I've been in 4 different airplane partnerships over the years (PA-28, Mooney 201, J-3, and C182), so if you would like to get some input, and thoughts what should be in an airplane partnership agreement, just send a pm. I also presently have an airplane on my own (c-195), so I can tell you how that compares, as well.

I hope you can work it out to keep your Ferrari!

    Good luck, Jeff

Thanks Jeff. I will keep that in mind on my search. Do you have any suggestions for the search. I was going to post some wanted ads on the aviation forums and keep my ears open at the local aerodromes. I belong to a flying club now at W42. Not a bad deal at $30/ mo. C172 $100/hr C152 67/hr. Both with upgraded avionics. Never had a problem with scheduling.

May be leaving a big basket of $$$$$ behind you in the next few years. Don't sell, you know you love the car, right?

I absolutely love driving the 308. Probably the greatest driver car I have driven. And leaving that basket behind is a major concern as well. Can't go anywhere but up I suppose.

After much pondering, brain storming, listing pro and cons, walking in circles, and even asking advice in confession , no not really. I have decided to put my white beauty on the market. I will be putting all the details together in the next weeks and deciding where to list it and for how much. Keep your eyes peeled. Any suggestions on where to list and how much to start are welcome. Thanks guys

What do you want more? That car or, maybe about $70,000 give or take?
