Hey Steve, get a load of this. Have you encountered similar? Flaming toilet rolls guide Royal Flying Doctor Service aircraft to remote airstrip - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
A proud Dad (and fellow V12 Gentleman) sent me this photo of his son flying an Orion yesterday. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Haha! Excellent. I haven't personally done that but I have heard of it. It pays to be able to think laterally in this job.
Aren't we up to the stage where we can put the GPS point in and then use a computed ILS to land the thing ? The F-111s could do that 35 years ago with the analogue navigation system set up for computed ILS
RNAV approaches are pretty much exactly that, and they are almost everywhere now. The autopilot will fly it down the slope just like an ILS. However there are still cloudbase and visibility minimums and of course you still need lights at night time (or flaming toilet paper as the case may be).
I trust the computers fine. It's the idiots whom programme them that I don't. It's more about the rules and what's legal than anything else. Something you military types don't have to worry about as much... The aircraft are certainly capable of flying a "virtual ILS" to any point you care to put into the system, but it's not legal (or necessarily safe) unless it's a published approach. But as I said RNAVs are popping up everywhere, they don't require any ground based aids, and they are almost as good as a real ILS.
ILS must have been uncommon 30+ years ago as TAA use to regularly use our ILS at Amberley And even had a Fokker Friendship "parked"on the side of the strip for several weels after clipping the arrestor cable with it's landing gear
Nice one, thanks Mike. It looks good in that livery. I took these about 15 minutes ago from my backyard. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
F-35A Australia: Inside our next-gen fighter jet Marketing article with a lot of missing info but a reasonable overview of a brilliant aircraft
Gee you look old in that photo Put the article up here so we can read it, ..... I don't want to subscribe to Rupert's newspaper
I am old. Only another 40 years and I'll probably buy a V12. Didn't realise you had to subscribe. Here you go you tight bastard! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks, the young lady looks hot You"ll need your limo driver's license when you're too old to fly So what I got from that article is that there is a RFDS base in each state ? Probably not VIC or TAS as they are too small ?
Lol! Yeah she's an excellent nurse and a lovely young woman. She even made me some cakes for my birthday! RFDS is divided up into sections. There are, or were, bases in all states but I think RFDS lost the contract in Vic to a private operator a few years ago so it is now "Air Ambulance" Victoria, not RFDS. Same in the northern part of the NT (hence why we technically only cover the southern half). Pretty sure the SE Section has at least one base in Tas.
I was deemed to be far too good looking to be photographed for the story. Didn't want to distract from the message, and all that.
We just had a few planes fly over Canberra for the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan. RAAF C 130-J was first. Huge plane! We also got to see a pair of USAF B52's. Now there's something you don't see very often. There's a couple more shots. Let me know if you want to see them. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
