This cannot be correct, maybe the buyer thought that he was bidding on a 330gtc? 😊

Great point! LOL.

 

Maybe that has something to do with the fact that many auction cars that turn up at dealers magically command huge price premiums justified by nothing more than some romantically scripted ad text.

 

I quite like 412016.
Corto Touring Spider. Owned new by Prince Bernhard of Holland.
Second owner raced it at Chimay in 1947. 2nd place to an ERA.
Believed to have been raced at Spa 24 hours in 1948 but doesn't appear in the records.
Belgian later owner in 1940s painted it red over the original light grey.
Bought in 1952 by A. James Ibold of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Jimmy preserved it.
He also had a 2.3 Figoni-bodied car, unrestored. He told me he used to keep sticks in the cabin to press the pedal/disengage the clutch while parked. He drove his cars, and kept them mechanically maintained.
Sold circa 2004 near the end of Jimmy's life to a mutual friend of ours, who then sold it on to Hugh Taylor.
Neil Twyman did the preservation work, including removing the red to reveal the original grey paint, including the hand-painted Canadian flags applied after the war during Bernhard's ownership to thank Canada for their part in liberating Holland.

Lovingly cared for by Jimmy for 52 years.
Unbroken, fascinating history.

I think if Hugh Taylor were so inclined, 412016 could be the first Preservation class car to win Best of Show at Pebble Beach.

There are also other great cars at the top of the 2.9 heap.
But in truth, anyone who gets to own one, or even drive one for a day, wins the vintage sports car lottery- regardless of chassis number.

 

I would have guessed this was a respray to match the early post-war pics. If that is paint from 1937 that's impressive. We need a 2.9 thread on F chat!

Yes, it won the first post war MM in 1947 before a long stint in Argentina. It survived the stint ,and a rather "interesting" 1970s restoration, in Argentina before being sold at Brooks Monterey in 2000 for approx. $4 million.

As my good friend Readplays has said, any of these 8cs are extraordinary cars and thats likely the reason for the best being worth as much as a GTO.

Seems to me that the pre-war cars are fairly steady, coming just under or to estimates and selling pretty well. Post 75 cars are still strong and will continue to grow (excluding some of the rash asking prices we where seeing). The prestige market has been the late 50's to 73 cars and that has cooled somewhat which may continue but still some really strong pricing when compared historically.

Perhaps I missed it somewhere, but does anyone have the high bid for the two Porsche 962 examples at the Saturday Mecum auction? Don't think either one of them sold, but don't know what the high bid was before the no sale.

It is thought for several reasons that the Simeone car #412031 is the 1938 Mille Miglia winner.

I happen to think #412033 is the most modern 2.9 and most important from a body design point of view. The now missing 1937 Lemans spider was also important, possibly chassis #412013(stripped of parts and scrapped or renumbered??).


I highly doubt much if any of that grey paint on #412016 is original as it was repainted red at one point and that would have damaged the grey paint.

 

Who managed to get sale prices for Gooding lots 104 - 106. Had to take a phone call...

 

I personally knew the car, its owner Jimmy and subsequent owner, and its condition for 20+ years.

Both failed to sell. High bids were $2.2 million for the Miller car and $750,000 for 962-122.
