One long vacation!

 

The car's owner or is the mechanic back on vacation? HAHA

 

I have seen brand new out of the packaging timing belt bearings seize up right after a major service ... This was at a dealer and because of the 2 year parts warranty they paid for everything including rebuilding the head.

 

Yes we are , leaving tommorow for Italy .

Hope your car eventually gets fixed. Sounds like the motor's going to need a lot of work to get repaired.

There is no bolt in the timing cover shoe guide as in the picture. Wonder if tech forgot to put bolt in or it came off as wasn't tighten.

I read somewhere that if you are on vacation long enough the car will fix it's self! Joking, joking smile ☺

 

Had a none Alfa specialist do the belts on a 4-pot Alfa 916 Spider we have. Not an expensive car to own or indeed buy. It's in great condtion and we love it.
Anyway April-July last year belts, Variator replaced. W/P (I think), head skimmed and some repairs to the suspension - £900 appx.

Earlier this year (600 miles later) after a weekend tour of Wales on the way home the car lost power. I suspected belt failure.

It transpired the variator which sits between the cam sprocket and cam shaft sheared. Manufacture fault or installation?

The garage offered me a cheap engine replacement and he'd use the belt since it wasn't broken :-O. He also offered me a Porsche 911 with a leaky roof.

I just went elsewhere and it cost £2000 for a replacement used, lower mileage engine and new clutch.
Car is probably worth £2k at the most. I learned a valuable lesson. Alfa Romeos like Ferrari require specialist knowledge. I'm thankful it was our little Alfa and not the 360. We did a similar Wales (only the North) tour a few weeks earlier in that. The Alfa was just to take in some of the things we missed.

As we await this carnage, my buddies D2 S8 was on the original timing belt at 166,xxx miles. Passenger side cam jumped one tooth. He is lucky the thermostat stuck shut and made him get in there.

I would like to know the brand of that belt.

 

Looks like the passenger side of the cam belt sheared off 10+ teeth more like it.

That's why you don't let cam belts go to 166,000 miles.

1. TENSILE FAILURE

Probable causes: Foreign body in drive; Excessive installation tension; Belt crimped due to improper handling.
Think Bernadette is right.....where is the shoe?

 

166,000 miles! If the owner was banking the savings from *not* changing the belts at each 50k increment (or whatever) he/she might still be net ahead of the game. Or not. Yeow!
