As said before...no matter how anyone puts it...Elton is not in the top 20...not even close.....i personaly wouldn't put him in the top 30 but i'll concede that's debatable.

Regardless Hamilton right now is one of the best paid drivers ever and definitely the best paid driver of the current field.

In fact he might be the best paid driver ever period. I don't think even MS ever got 50 millions for one season. Then again for a real comparison these sums have to be adjusted for inflation and I'm too lazy to do that now.

Actually he is. About #7 or 8 right now. Based on the only official measuring system F1 provides. Everything else is fan talk.

My dearest buddies pedro and Peter

I glad you find some amusement in my posts. Just my views but a fat man in his 50s wouldnt win in today's f1. Maybe if fangio was a young man he would be very good but I count his achievements for less

What you must remember about Michael is that he really arrived on the scene in the same moment we mourned the loss of Senna....clearly a tough act to follow. Yet, by 1995 people were already claiming him as a new revelation. I disliked him at Benetton because it meant just that many more years of Ferrari sucking while a clothing team enjoyed success with the 'next great thing'. When he left Benetton and Flavio for Ferrari, I was both shocked and overjoyed at the prospect of a resurrection. Him being able to deliver 5 titles to a team on a 25-year dry spell was nothing short of amazing at the time.

Make no mistake though...he was a big deal before he went to Ferrari.

Now ask yourself if a fat man in his 50s could win against a young Moss, what would this man be capable of if trained in his 20s...I guess none of the current driver would be able to match his talent...You should watch old racing movies to see with what ease he is driving...
And he was a gentleman, far away from the primadonnas racing in todays F1...
This man (like Clark) came in F1 only with talent and not like todays drivers with years of education, training and sponsorship, only by pure talent...think about it.
Simply transporting this man into presence and say he would not win in the shape he was is just ignorant and says a lot about your reasoning....

I reiterate (once again) that it is unreasonable to compare drivers of different eras, and even more crazy to try ranking them.

They race in different times, on different circuits, on different cars, against different competitors, etc...
Saying so and so is better and so and so, because, blah, blah, blah, only show the ignorance of people who made such claims.

The choice being purely subjective, the conversation will always be taken over by someone with a personal agenda and end up in personal attacks leading to a ban.
I would have thought that the Moderator would be able to put an end to trolling, but it seems he cannot ...

I have read enough nonsense in the last few pages, to consider this thread as completely futile, in my book. It's a pity that now it spills on other threads as well ...

You may have a point there mr singhoff. Who knows what he would be capable of if born in this generation and trained in karts from young. Maybe he would have eviscerated the competition or maybe not. F1 is certainly more competitive now that's for sure so it's hard to tell

Going back so far makes it hard as f1 is so different. Maybe I am rating him too low. At this point it gets so tough maybe I should leave it to the record books to decide

Newsflash, the record books already decided....... Fangio was a great driver, compared to his peers, he was the yardstick by which they were measured. To discount him as a 'fat man in his 50's' shows the contempt you have for anything but your own slanted views.

Elton may well set some records, but he will never have an ounce of the class, talent nor presence of a true great, 'fat' Fangio included.

But where I'm going with this is that MS, Senna etc were probably paid twice as much as the next best paid driver while Vettel, Alonso and even Rosberg are not that far off Hamilton's figures.
So, taking stats away, demand/supply suggests Hamilton is just about beating the other current drivers in these last few years while other greats were head and shoulders above the competition even in terms of pay.

As you are from NZ ,I would be interested on your views about previous F1 drivers from there.

Do you get to go down to watch any live racing at all?

Well none of them are near GOAT status that's for sure. But I guess Bruce McLaren formed the second best team of all time, arguably. So that's something.

I think these days ultimately NZ is too small to get another f1 driver. Mitch Evans is very good but he will never have the sponsors to get into f1. He has giltrap etc but you really need to be from a big country to get the big sponsors. Mitch said he would have been an f1 test driver already but lost the opportunity due to lack of money.

Never bother to watch any racing here. I only care about f1 don't follow anything else. V8 Supercars etc is boring, Holdens and fords etc do nothing for me. Just a bunch of big sedans almost
