I'm pretty sure he did and that was a decade ago. But I'm not sure his exact salary was ever publicized.

2003-2006 his salary was 50m a year IIRC, and then he had his endorsements still. Also add for inflation...

Difference is, schumi was worth a hundred times what he got, I wouldn't give Elton the taxi fare to take me home when I'm too drunk to drive hehehehe

Comparing salaries of two different eras is a difficult metric but if you compare relative salaries of the best drivers of a same era you can tell just how dominant and highly rated the best driver of his time was IMO.
Taking away winning stats, I believe this is another good way to objectively rank drivers

    2016 top salaries:
    Vettel 50 millions
    Fred 40
    Ham 30

This year Ham signed an over 150 million 3 years deal

Also salaries are not absolute: Ferrari is probably paying Seb a premium so he stays with the sub par team whereas Merc can play a bit of poker as everbody wants to drive their car. Still they value Ham 3 times over Nico based on $

So Ham is currently #1 or #2

Thanks. Guess MS was paid at least twice as much as the next best paid driver instead for example. Or even Alonso at Ferrari was by far the best paid. We'll see about Hamilton but for the moment at least he doesn't attract much higher sums than the competition, probably because anybody could win in his car where MS and Alonso could make the difference, if it makes sense.

So those three are pretty much on a same level, both for the cash and their abilities. As said before, none of them stands out and therefore none of them qualifies for a "GOAT"...
Salary is also much different from the past as they are not only paid for their driving abilities but also for their marketing abilities.

Seb and Ham are goats in my book and Alonso is not too shabby either.

The multiple WDCs are the top 3 earners. Makes sense to me.

Since when was salary the metric for GOAT status?

I know people on big money who are complete idiots

Easy there: Hamilton is currently the top earner in F1. Only followed by other multiple WDCs. Nothing wrong with that picture

Alonso is better than Hamilton on the track, Alonso is closer to the edge with fewer mistakes. I just do not like Alonso, or like admitting he may be the best driver on the grid. I think Vettel is close, and as I like Vettel better, I'd rather say the order is Vettel = Alonso > Red Bull Drivers > Hamilton

I do not know about the rest but although I do not like him either I would agree that Alonso seems to be the most consistent of the top drivers with less mistakes on the edge. Both Vettel and Hamilton tend to overshoot from time to time....

No way is Vettel the best driver on the grid.

Yes he's won 4 WDC's but all he had to do was beat Webber and even then he struggled. Yes Alonso in a weak Ferrari got close but in reality the RB was miles superior.

Alonso or Ricci or Vestapin are the current best drivers. Elton maybe the 5/6th best on the grid, behind Button IMO

Adjusted for inflation he'd be earning far more than either Ham or Vettel right now .

If we compare his salary at that time to the next driver, he'd be earning double if not triple of whatever the next highest driver earned those seasons.

Pity you didn't get to watch a bit of the Toyota Series down there.

You might have had chance to see one of the future GOAT ..Lando Norris (16).

You will hear a lot about him in the years to come.unless he stumbles on the financial side.

I'm not so sure, but i did read somewhere, many many years ago, that MS earned over 100mil back in 2000 i think. A small portion of it was from Ferrari, while the big chunk came from Marlboro.

In his prime, i remember it was very tight money race between him and Tiger Woods.
