Lost 1st & 3rd gear as I was downshifting from 4th to 3rd any thoughts?
Shifter linkage bracket found just rear of driver's side motor mount probably has a problem (loose). Easy fix.
How to shift a Ferrari....... Count "one thousand one, allow the shifter to center, then one thousand two to the next gear......" Not saying you broke it, but my Ferrari mechanic made a point of taking a ride with me when I first got the car and instructing me to shift the car gently and smoothly, allowing time for everything to line up and work like it is supposed to. His words: "You can't shift a Ferrari like a muscle car" and "fast is smooth and smooth is fast." Just sayin'..... Good luck getting her fixed and enjoy her smoothly. Alden
Very nice Example Vinny, congrats... Just an FYI, your wheels have been mounted on the wrong sides of the car. The flat edge of the wheel spoke rolls ahead of the angled edge. Just flip each side over and you'll be good to go. If you have directional tires make sure the shop doing the work has them rotating in the right direction. Check out official Ferrari images on-iine to see how the wheels should look. Enjoy the ride!
That does not work well at all in an F355. That car rewards swift shifts, anything like described above will have the car jerking like a bronco because the engine will be almost idling by the time the next gear is engaged. Bad for clutch, bad for bearings, bad for CV joints, etc. If it's at all similar to the F355 mechanism it is not difficult to adjust but it will take time to fine tune it so that all gears (slots in the gate) engage easily. Congrats on your new Ferrari!
I also noticed that it goes into reverse without pushing down on shifter. Wondering if that's part of the adjustment also
The OP has a 348. Of course, if you don't practice throttle control the car is going to buck. Rev matching is something most of us know about. I think the point my mechanic was making is that the shifter, long linkage and distance to the tranny mean you have to be smooth and not jam anything trying to get quick shifts. The other lesson here is once you get the "feel" for your car's shifter, you can speed it up if you want to. Alden
Ok I see that but is it ok to be able to put it into reverse without pushing down on shifter because I've read that some people can't put it into reverse without pushing down on shifter thanks in advance.
The reverse tab on the bottom of the shift gate is probably worn. The block on the shifter shaft that meets the tab on the shift gate could be worn too. It should look like this, you can see where the worn down part was built up as a repair: Alden Image Unavailable, Please Login
Ok I get it now, thanks for the picture. now I can see mine is worn a little on both ends.thanks again for the help
Very true. Knowing the RPM at which the car wants to be shifted is important to driving swiftly and smoothly. They like winding up a bit. Shifting a 348 properly is an art, and that of course is why some gripe about the shift feel
Has anyone trimmed a bit the reverse tab to mekae the shift into reverse a bit easier? I have to press HARD on the stick to go pass the tab.
You can certainly do that, but be warned that anyone who drives your car that is not familiar with the Ferrari shift pattern is going to go for "reverse" instead of "first gear." I think the detent is there to prevent this and also, it keeps you from accidently getting the shifter into the reverse gate when going from first to second. I know.......no one else ever drives "your" Ferrari. lol. Alden
