I want to buy the correct spare tire hold down bolt for my 1977 US 308 but I'm not sure which one it should be. There are different lenght and style. Superformance sell one that has 110mm with a straight bolt. Some have a thick steel spacer at the knob. What is correct and how long? Pictures would be nice. Thanks a lot for any help! PS, someday I'll have a wheel to put there if Bigtex can find it in his pile of parts.
Hi Claude, length and spacer depends on whether you want to store your wheel with face up or down. Or whether you have a space saver wheel. This is my version for space saver wheel facing down. bolt length (only the steel portion): 95mm aluminium spacer length: 25mm And without spacer it works with the rim facing upwards. Usually the non-ABS cars use a 110mm tire hold-down: 61609400 Tire Hold Down Nut (110mm) - Ricambi America, Inc.
My 76 was missing one and I just ended up getting a Hill one from Daniel at Ricambi. On Ricambi's site you'll be able to choose an option that fits our 308s. Since many of the older cars are missing these ods and ends, I feel it especially fun to keep things complete. Good luck.
I have an opportunity to buy an original one instead of repro but want to be sure it has the right lenght. It come from a 79 euro and has a removable aluminium spacer.
Thanks Martin, my car I think would have been equiped with a regular 14 inches wheel. Don't know if the bolt is the same. I hope someone with a stock US setup will chime in.
As written in other threads, normally (normally, but NOT anytime) the EU cars have had the space saver spare and the US cars have had the full space spare. The bolt for US cars has to be 110 mm of length without spacer. The bolt for EU cars has to be 95 mm without spacer for "face-up-mounting" and 95 mm with spacer for "face-down-mounting" the "slim" space-saver spare. BUT: There is enough space under the fixed nut to drill in the 110 mm bolt without spacer in any steel-car. (I don't know exactly about glass cars). AND: the original bolt is silver zinc plated, not yellow for any 308.
So a 95mm will be too short for a stansdard wheel? The picture I have of the original look closer to 90mm.
