    Greetings all

I'm looking at a carb 308 with a just rebuilt motor and there's a loud
screeching metallic noise between about 1000-3000 RPM.

No noise at idle and it goes away after about 3000 RPM.

Seems to come from the upper right (passenger) side of the engine.

Unfortunately I don't have a recording and the seller is not helpful, doesn't want a PPI (yeah, I know).

Initially he dismissed it as a belt, then said the water pump wasn't changed so it could be the bearing.

A mechanic I talked to said it's probably camshaft noise.

    Any opinions?

    Thanks

Whatever is wrong, sounds like the seller knows it will cost nothing but $$$$$$$$$$$. His problem, luckily not yours. :)

Seller doesn't want a PPI? (for Chaya: PrePurchaseInspection :) )
Those cars are not so rare, that there's any need for you to waste your time.
Like others said. Take your money and run!

More specifically - any opinions on the noise?

Would a water pump noise go away at higher RPM?
It always goes away at around 3k and the car drives very well otherwise.

I would walk away, especially since the owner's a pain,
but if it's more likely to be a water pump or something external,
it's worth the risk - the car is otherwise excellent.

How can you say, that the car is otherwise excellent, when the seller refuses a PPI?
That noise can be caused by a lot of reasons. Yes, a waterpump noise can go away with higher revs. it can go away with higher temperatures (experienced by myself) It may be caused by a faulty tensioner pulley, caused by lower cam drive bearings. Or even an alternator going south. There are myriads of possible reasons, not possible to diagnose without a thorough PPI.
It seems, that you like playing Russian Roulette? :)
Sorry if you don't like my words. But I'm trying to save you a lot of pain.

Could be a bearing but if the seller doesn't want a PPI RUN don't walk.

No issues, I understand it's a walk in the dark for the most part.
Car is otherwise excellent because almost everything was redone about 6 months ago.
Wasn't run much since then. According to the seller the noise showed up after the car sat for 2-3 months.

I'm not taking what he says as fact, but he does seem to be more of a jerk than a scammer.
Can't be bothered, take it or leave it attitude.

I would also walk, but does the noise go away once the car is warm? It is not unusual for some of these car to make a howling noise that sound metallic at idle when cold. My QV has doesn't it since new. At 3k rpm, no.

Any owner that won't allow a PPI is not worth dealing with.

Ok, enough of this back and forth...I've given this a fair amount of thought and I think you should buy that car immediately...And if it turns out to be a dog, you didn't hear it from me... :)

Step back and think about this for a moment.. Trust but verify, or you're just begging to be bent. Some red flags here for me.
    - Car has been totally rebuilt less than six months ago yet owner can't be bothered with a PPI? I don't know anyone who wouldn't proudly show you every inch of that car instead of being unintrested. Should also have between $30,000/$50,000 in receipts with him doing much of the work.
    - Who does a total rebuild, then opts for throwing on a questionable water pump?
    - Maybe he had the same give a sh&t attitude fixing it as he does selling it.

We're just trying to save you from and expensive learning curve.

You are getting solid advice here but you don't want to hear it.

Why do you keep saying that the car is "otherwise excellent?" Because it's pretty?
Do you know ANYTHING about 308's?

You sound like you made up your mind already so I wish you the best....maybe you'll get lucky.

Receipts are there. He doesn't care. Whether there's a big problem or not he's not changing his price.

He showed me the car, I met the mechanic who did the job,
but, that guy dismissed it as a belt.

Not jumping on it, there are obvious red flags. Wanted some feedback regarding the possible sources of the noise while I think about it.

There's almost enough overhead to redo the engine if necessary and still be above water, but unless there's a good chance it's the pump or something external, I'll pass.

Excuse me? You already saw it? Duh! Then why do you need our help? Obviously you don't know a waterpump from a waterbed or you wouldn't be asking us stupid questions that can only be answered with a first hand examination...you're obviously not serious, your last statement makes no sense and your wasting our time :(

Glad to hear that:) People see a red shiny car and they loose it. I did the same myself when I bought my car 7 years ago but I was lucky.

PS Keep in mind an engine redo can cost you 25G's

If its a belt then have a look after he has changed it to see if it has gone quiet, i would expect the mechanic to change it if he has pride in what he does. Other wise run away as fast as u can
