930 Turbo Carrera

Please post pictures. I knew I remembered this (20 years ago). Do all 3.0 turbos have hand throttles?

I believe I have seen one 78 930 posted for sale awhile back that had a hand throttle.

'75-77 3-liter Turbos all had hand throttles. They were deleted with the introduction of the 3.3 liter Turbo electronic cold start relay.

 

1976 Turbo Carrera (#0014?) made a cameo appearance in the June 1976 Volkswagen Greats magazine article on Marty Schneider’s turbocharged 914. The issue also featured an article on Bob Garretson’s modified 914 including a photo at the 1975 Seattle Porsche Parade Autocross, entry #255.

Interesting that Lesney used a color combination for their 1975 Turbo Matchbox model that Porsche likely never delivered - viper green with yellow interior.

A/C and sunroof…the two most expensive RoW options to boot…

 

The past weekend I went to a classic event with the old lady, still a wonderful ride after almost 40 years.

I am still in the break-in phase after the engine rebuilt, about 500 km done and another 1000 km to go: it is going to take a while.

When I was in Germany a couple years ago, there was a shop in Shuttgart- Mohringen. they did all type of aftermarket Porsche work both exterior and interior. I don't recall the name of the shop but they did mainly Porsches perhaps exclusively. I was on a Porsche Treffin Tour with Fast Lane Travel. All the people were Porsche owners and all were very impressed with the shop's work. You might contact Fast Lane Travel - [email protected] to get the name of the shop as I am sure they go there often on Porsche tours.

A seller has posted a 1977 Porsche 930 silver/lobster with the same VIN as your car. I was thinking of buying the car but then discovered this anomaly. The seller has provided a Certificate of Authenticity but who know if it's real. Would you mind checking the VIN on your car again to see if there was any error? Thanks very much.

This car 1977 930 Vin 9307800186 is on the Turbo Carrera Registry - 930 Turbo Carrera 3.0-liter: Registry Vin as Copper Brown Metallic - Sunroof delete brown interior.

Apparently these are two different cars or the one on the registry has been repainted and had the interior changed which I would doubt since that would drastically alter the value and it’s collectability or one of the Vin numbers must be incorrect.

 

I've seen the engine size of the 3.o turbo as 2993 ccm (factory spec), 2994 ccm and now this German card deck notes 2992 ccm. Any reason for the descrepencies in the swept displacement? I know it's only a cubic centimeter, but I've never seen Porsche have different engines sizes other than this.

Regarding car #9309800186, Page 192, post 3839, posted by Monospecchio on this website/thread references this car (9309800186) with photos showing it as copper brown, brown interior, 10k miles. The eBay website shows a COA is included with the car. I really hope the COA doesn't show it with tartan interior, turbo graphics and silver paint. Yes it's highly likely this is the same car. What a shame.

 

Not sure why there's a difference but as you mentioned for factory specs, 2993 ccm appears in the homologation documents.

 

1976 Turbo Carreras #0011 and #0012 appeared in the December 1975 Volkswagen Greats magazine. One photo shows both Turbos on Ohio’s Transportation Research Center oval track.

The interior photo of ’76 #0011 shows a tartan-dress seat with a 1975-style round seat tilt release knob. Additionally, both engine bays of these Turbo Carreras had 1975 alternator/regulator reminder decals on the far-left side.

Another article photo shows Al Holbert at the wheel of the silver Turbo Carrera at TRC at 140 mph. The other Turbo Carrera driver was Peter Gregg and the event was also attended by Hans Mezger and Ernst Fuhrmann.

These are probably the most ugly seats Porsche ever made. They're so called Fuhrmann seats and were an option for the early (and later) Turbos - I believe on any car until the early eighties. Fuhrmann was an engine guy at Porsche. He built the Carrera engine for the 356 and was also CEO of the company for a few years. But he also had a bad back and is said to have ordered these specific seats. Since they were 4000 dollar seats it's not strange they weren't ordered too many times. I did not weigh them yet, but they're at least 25 percent lighter than the sports seats. Some say all Martini Turbos had these, in red, white and blue. Seat porn? Not really, they look like fat stranded seals. But even though I have no purpose for them, I just had to have 'm.

Please fill me in on the blanks and mistakes.

Interesting 1/24 scale Porsche Turbo model kit. Artwork depicts a 1975 model year with black Porsche door script (option code M439, 95 DM) but also fitted with Japan-style manual mirrors, U.S. sealed beam sugar scoop headlights, and U.S. front parking lights (all typical of Japanese market 3-liter Turbos). Unknown if this was purely an artist rendition or Porsche delivered a 1975 model with this color/options.
