I dare not say. The ''scratch'' rebuild above was done when F40's where still around £300K-ish...But I wouldn't at all be surprised if the same exact rebuild right now would suddenly cost the same as a market value F40...
I think the last publically known rebuild of a burned out F40 was the guy on here who took some stick about it? Roland Linder?
Knowing what I spent on the LM gives me a good idea and the maths would not be good. Very sad to see, especially after a full restoration, and it reminds me just how close so many hot elements are in this car and a fire suppression system is mandatory to my mind, given their current value. Before I take my car home, this has reminded me to ask Mototechnique to just double check every union.
I think the Lindler F40 was worse or at least as bad. He purchased an F40 engine on ebay. Can you believe that? I remember seeing it.
If the event has only just happened as reported then it will be months before any claim is settled anyway, and if it does end up as as Cat A or B only a registered salvage company could buy it anyway from the Insurance company, that is if it does not go directly to one of their approved ones, stripped and crushed. It may appear on UK copart in many months time.
I bought my F40 from a very well known indie dealer in the UK. He used the Ferrari dealer I use, so I thought all good. This was 2011 and the car is with me today, and in fine health. But when she was delivered to me, my garage stank of fuel. So much so the smell of petrol came into my house through two sets of doors. I phoned the indie dealer and my Ferrari dealer. Both said the F40 naturally vents fuel vapour so it's normal. By chance my electrician was working in my garage some days later and said while he knew nothing of F40 he said the smell was over-powering and couldn't be anything other than dangerous. That was enough and I went to a specialist. They showed me the "new'' tanks which my Ferrari dealer installed. They were cheap UK made rubbish held on by clips you see in your garden holding a hosepipe together. The specialist installed American made ATL tanks. The difference was day and night. I had a lucky escape. What happened with my Ferrari dealer, who I still use? They paid in full (retail) for my new tanks, they stopped using the crap UK made tanks and the service manager is now with Mercedes. The story about the poor F40 in this thread is very sad and confirms just how sensitive these cars are. I always wonder when I see F40s being offered with new tanks, or someone buying them as cheap as they can. Not blowing our own trumpets - ok I am - F40s (and 50s) which belong to FChat members should be valued higher. I submit we take care of our beauties like no other.
A lucky save, and a reminder to anyone buying an F40 (and F50?)...take a specialist with you and check the tanks + fittings.
I just clicked on a Road & Track article & brought me here. Makes me wonder if they ever ask for permission to use photos. Sucks also about to see the F40 burned up but if there is a surviving VIN, it can be rebuilt. Newly Restored Ferrari F40 Burns to the Ground
complicated, but look at their source... Motor1. Go to Motor1 and see their source... FerrariChat. Motor1 and FerrariChat same owners. I gave Motor1 editor heads up and then it is going viral, but it started here. I also spoke with Paul and images are public domain. That news business is different than forums, but basically they just reference each other and any pics they will run with, but if turns out they are protected then they can be removed.
Ah i guess the claim has been settled and its moved onto the salvage company, those pics were apparently only just taken as it was being transported
The pics originated on another public forum I use and were taken by the friend of the poster, who also supplied the info I mentioned in the original post. As it was public info and of interest to the users here I brought them across. It seems fchat has much more traffic hence why it ballooned from there on.
Its all second hand info so to be taken with a pinch of salt, but no doubt there is a story there somewhere, and someone loved that car :-(
Hi, Anyone knows were it is in the UK please?Auction or Salvage place.I need help to locate were it is.
For sure... And there is a OEM design flaw in cat F40s. The magnetti-marelli ECU runs the cars very rich by default. That is by design. The problem occurs when you are putting around town, the cats are silently all the while loading up with fuel. Then when you get on the freeway, give it the beans, and the nuclear meltdown occurs... All this is compounded by the fact that many F40s sit around to keep their mileage down so their injectors plug up and drip raw fuel instead of atomizing it. Not saying that is what happened in this case, only that if you have one, the best thing you can do is drive it hard and drive it often!
The really sad part, aside from the loss, is the trolls at Jalopnik eat this crap up for their own amusement.
same issue with my car. strong gas smell. i asked the mechanic in geneva and at bob houghton's, and they looked into the tanks, and reported that the originals, the liners, the clips everything was fine and dandy. but the gas smell persists. the car is now at houghtons in storage, so i guess they are responsible for it.... my car also has an after market fire suppression system for both the passenger and engine compartments.
