Got my dream car yesterday, a 1984 308 GTS. I bought this from F40 of TV fame. The car had an alarm, stereo, and remote radar detector in a previous life. Unfortunately after removal of the fuse/relay block cover and passenger footwell plate I have found significant molestation of the car's electrical system. I have never seen such a hack job as the installers did things unimaginable to this car.

That aside can anyone tell me if this car comes from the factory with multiple relays (US Made) that are screwed into the underside of the dash just above the fuse/relay block.

These relays seem to control ignition, lighting, horn, and odnly enough windows. I believe these are added relays so the defunct alarm system could control these accessories.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Attached one view of the carnage.

Welcome and congrats Archer! So you bought that from
Wayne Carini? What's the S/N of your 84? Also someone here has the enlarge HD wiring diagram that you can download.

Mike-yes from wayne Carini. I did buy the wiring diagrams but still would love to know if anyone has relays screwed underneath the dash and if that's stock. Will analyze the diagrams tomorrow. VIN in the image.

There are many common mods that required relays to remove current from the light stalk switch for example. Also the window switches. Other mods to allow parking lights on without raising the headlamps. And most likely for your added systems as well. Good luck returning it to stock but some of the mods I mention are worth keeping.

That really doesn't look that bad. My 84 had everything you mentioned as well. Looked like a rat's nest up in there.

I actually enjoy those little Saturday afternoon de-wiring projects. Get out the soldering gun, heat shrink, put on a football game and get at it!

Crown dog and Dr Cosgrove thanks for the input.

In the case of my car I believe the extra relays are due to the defunct alarm system that seems to have tentacles everywhere-for flashing lights, horn, putting down windows, disabling ignition, etc. What an unbelievable mess this thing is. I can see wires that were cut and then spliced as it must have been a "hit or miss installer." On top of that the mess of the stereo/amp/crossover install—now all ripped out now.

Having said that I'm afraid to see if the car even starts now and may have to get my wife to steer as I push it out of one garage and into another.

Unfortunately the only way to fix this is going to be to get the wiring diagram and trace every route/wire one by one fixing them along the way.

Don't get discouraged. It will be tedious but you can do it. The old adage is true, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time."

The stuff that happens to cars over 30 years!

With a little effort it looks like it all could be correctable. It doesn't look too too bad. Best wishes.

I feel for ya'. My car came with main and subwoofer power amps and a CD changer in the trunk, a big subwoofer in the passenger seat footwell and a whole bunch of thick gauge wiring everywhere.

That was what I could see. As I started removing the stuff, I discovered remnants of at least 3 different stereo system installs with wires running along the rocker panels, through the central tunnel and on both sides of the engine compartment. It was not pretty.

Its all gone now, with a simpler stereo set-up, better but more stock in appearance.

Rearding the intermittent issues with the*directionals check your hazzard switch isnt worn out. I had intermittent turn signals but when I pulled back on the hazzard switch toggle a little bit the directionals worked fine .

GTB has a glovebox (with light), so that could be those wires.
