Anyone tried this "upgraded" window lift motor?

The stock mechanism is easily cleaned and rebuilt. The motor is usually ok. My windows would not move without hand assistance. After reworking the mechanism the windows move with ease. I also replaced the window channel molding.

 

I have seen this motor and considered trying them. "Birdman" recommends a unit that sends the correct amperage to the motor which he says the original design layout does not do. Which is why everyone has problems with the windows. I'm going to address this problem this off season. Film at eleven.....

 

Mine were slow and the passengers even stopped half way down. Cleaned both gearboxes and realigned/retensioned passenger side and both sides are ok now with stock motors and wiring. Sometimes they just need cleaning/servicing

 

The hard part of the job is rewinding and rerouting the wire, right? How challenging was that?

 

Not very difficult. You can use cable ties to hold the winding while your route the cables. But do draw a picture of how the cable is routed before you take it off and make the replacement cable the same length as the one you take off.

 

There even exists a helping tool. I got mine together with a used motor assembly from TRutlands many years ago.
Worth its weight in gold.

The glass on my car was very slow, in fact sometimes would not lift at all. I lubricated the motors and drive shafts without removing them. Installed Birdman Fuse Blocks and the suggested Window Accelerators (see the Birdman website) and the windows go up and down really fast for an old car. The Window Accelerators made a huge difference, but Jonathan Birdman's Fuse Blocks increased the Voltage to the electric motors significantly. I would suggest lubricating the cables and pulleys when you have the Door Trim off. I believe this was all covered in another Thread on this site. Do take a look!

These new style motors are amazing. I got mine from TRutlands.

Is that $499 for 1 or 2 motors? Seems a lot to me,,,?

 

TRutlands was about $600 for two I think.

 

The 2 Fuse Blocks from Jonathan Birdman cost $180 plus the Window Accelerators from Larry Dickman cost $119. All up $299 plus S&H. Not bad I think!

 

I had a video of mine somewhere. Window down and back up takes about 10 seconds per side now.

I have two of them on my 308. I had cleaned the existing ones and was never happy with the results. These were a bit of a pain to run the cable but there was ample direction on FerrariChat. I am very pleased with the result.

 

Amperage draw is the problem, use the dual relay circuit posted at least a decade ago. Just need to add a power lead from the fuse box... Instant faster windows for $20 and an afternoon.

Hi David,

this tool is not, and never was available separately. It just held the cable on the spool for packaging and transport purposes. But it really helps while working on the windows.
Therefore I redesigned this tool myself and sell it as a 3d printed part. I don't know, whether it's allowed to link to the sale ads section, where I have a thread. Therefore I will send you it via PM later.

Birdman fuse blocks and grease on the cables made such a huge difference that I plan no further work on my windows. They work just fine.

 

I'd ask the same question I usually do regarding "upgrades" to existing systems...In this case, "Did the windows go up/down adequately when the car was new?" If not, then yes, something better is needed, if they DID, then unless the motor has failed or parts are broken, cleaning (to include electrical connections) and lubrication will restore it to operating as it did...

Whether they worked OK when new, I don't know though I rented a couple of several-year old 308's when in Hawaii back in the 80's and I don't recall the windows being unusual in their up/down performance. But admittedly that wouldn't have been something I was particularly concerned about while doing my (poor) Magnum impersonation.
