Firts glimpse of new 488 Challenge

    We are in Jerez, Spain for the last race of the Europe Challenge serie. In our drivers briefing, some technical details and photos were revealed. Of course no photography was allowed as they even put stickers on smartphone cameras.

    First of all, the car looks amazing, IMO. It looks very similar to 488 GT3 but even nicer and meaner. I might even buy one and put in the garage :)

    Here are the technical details and differences to the old Challenge car

    - Totally new aero kit very similar to GT3 car
    - Inconel exhaust system
    - Lighter engine and gear box
    - Lithium battery
    - New and more racing oriented steering wheel
    - Rear view camera and display instead of mirror
    - 1.5 sec faster than 458 Challenge in Mugello and 1 sec faster in Fiorano

    These are things that I remember, I might have missed some other details or maybe not %100 correct.

    It will be shown to drivers on Wednesday or Thursday in Daytona finals and to the general public in the week end.

    I was told that it will be priced very close to the 458 Challenge, so around 240-250K Euros

    The front bumper looks great. Nice proportions. I am hoping the Special version of the 488 looks similar.

    It looks like a 488 with a Evo kit. Nothing exotic. Just an evolution with a turbo engine. I heard they are having issues with the turbo's because of the extensive use of plastic pieces in the engine.
    Maybe developing the GT3 and GTE first was done to help work the bugs out.

    Amazing what you can hear and believe!!

    Have raced a 488 GT3 all season, no issues. By the way, what plastic pieces in the engine? There are some development issues but nothing that is not to be expected, including the development of the tyres..

    Peter good news. Factory trained techs are complaining about the plastic pieces in the new street 488 turbo engine. Last time I saw a 488 GTE engine it was in a million pieces at Ft Lauderdale before the 24.

    The 458 GT3 is worlds apart from a 458 Challenge. I am curious how close the 488 CH is to the 488 GT3/E.

    Of course, it will not be close. 488 Challenge will cost around 250K Euros and the 488GT3 costs 550K.

    But, IMO, the gap between 488 Challenge and GT3 will be smaller than the gap between 458 Challenge and GT3

    The car that you saw in Ft Lauderdale before the 24, was being rebuilt after the Roar by AF Corse. This is a completely standard procedure on any car, GTE or GT3, before a 24 hour race - regardless of the brand.

    The 488 Challenge has a chassis that is derived from the road car but has a lot more power Thant the GT cars as the BoP severely limits the power output with the GTE having even less power than the GT3.

    good news! I hope its like the Lambo Trofeo. More GT3 than Street car.

    I understand it is standard procedure. My point was I could not see anything. The 488 CH should be on display at Daytona Dec 1-4, 2016.

    With some luck and good connections maybe I'll be able to see the new 488 Challenge next week when I visit the factory :)
