The best solution is a surface next the track that provides an actual penalty in single direction corners, and a no questions asked time penalty for corners that the track changes direction.

That, or just throw away track limit enforcement all together. Its just very frustrating watching the pole sitter have an obviously invalid lap count, as well as other driver's at the US GP when they obviously intended to go all four wheels off as it was faster. This makes a frustrating situation for those who actually did keep two wheels on.

Not enforcing the rules simply means you are penalizing those that complied.

Just watched the replay and I don't like Vettel anymore, I love him! Who cares he lost the podium, his swearing was worth the ticket and frankly well deserved on Verstappen and Whiting. We have our first really Italian German driver!!! :D

Whiting is a confused moron; has been for years. Seb was right. Simply stated Max had to give the position back asap and backed Seb into Ricci, thereby making it necessary for Seb to defend. If Seb had been given the place back when he should have perhaps he wouldn't have had to defend in the manner in which he did.

Only thing missing is Ricci saying "Seb, he's my favorite."

    This.

The whole situation was created by the spineless moron Charlie not forcing Ves to give back the position.

The sport is a farce when the race result is determined after the finish, drivers are humiliated by public swap outs on the podium, and the public is conned by further podium changes after all of that. Utter shambles.

Sadly, I think that Vettel's penalty is not out of place. The saddest thing is that this strict enforcement of the rules brought an unfair result, because Ricciardo would never had a chance of overtaking if Verstappen had no held Vettel.

In the end, everybody lost. I just hope that the public spanking of Withing goes on and finally something changes.

One of the most boring races of the year, absolutely no overtaking, dominated by completely erroneous decisions by race control. This morning, Charlie should be waking up wondering where the **** it all went wrong yesterday. A race winner that didn't even bother to turn into the first turn - no advantage?, my arse. An 19 year old firecracker trying to smash his way through turn one, and then blaming those he hit. Same firecracker then decides that he is on work experience as race director, and blanks the rule they all know, when you gain an advantage or fail to lose a position by foul means, you give the place back. Red bull fans may be happy that he backed Vettel up and allowed Ricci to have a go at him, but it was a false situation where by rights, Vettel would have been just out of reach given the times he could do (bear in mind Vettel tyres were TWENTY laps younger than verstappens)

A farce, at least Nico got second, and one win, or a second and third, and he is champion!

I watched a second time the 2016 Mexican GP last night, to make sure my eyes didn’t deceive me. That was one of the most appalling race I have ever seen; I am not kidding.

The behaviour of some drivers went completely off the scale, IMO, and the lack of consistency in applying the rules made the officials like a bunch of fools.

Aggressive moves, off track excursions, bad temper, foul language, display of arrogance, incompetence, tantrums, there was everything to put off a casual viewer of this race. There were too many incidents, so I won’t bother listing them here. Some protagonists behaved like young thugs; not what you expect from career sportsmen earning millions.
Is that really what F1 has become? I can’t hardly believe it!

I must say I am glad that I didn’t pay a penny to watch it, nor travel distances to be there. I think the spectators at the track in Mexico City were treated with a pantomime in the end. What a shamble!

On this forum and other places, F1 fans complain about the new formula, the hybrid cars, the aero, the lack of noise, but to me, the drivers are the biggest let down in this era. They have become a bunch of over-paid prima-donas with juvenile ego. F1 is now like a soap opera.

Correction, F1 has been a joke since 2014... Today just highlighted the hypocrisy, let me get this straight, Hamilton gets no penalty for cutting the first corner straight and gaining a huge advantage on the entire field, no penalty. Verstappan cuts a corner, he gains an advantage and the FIA waits until the race is over to do anything about it, Verstappan is penalized 5 seconds for less of an infraction than Hamilton made at the start. We then replace Verstappan with Vettel for the podium ceremony, but he is then penalized for moving under breaking (and properly calling Charlie Whiting out) and he is replaced by Daniel Ricciardo. This is so bad it is now almost worth watching because it is such an amateur hour with the rules, welcome to the WWEF1....at least pro wrestling does not pretend to be real.

I don't blame Seb for blowing his cool. All the inconsistency this season and with rule changes every other race has gotten ridiculous. Race control says track limits will be strictly enforced, then they pick and choose when and where. They say no driver coaching, enforce it, then they cancel that rule... If Ham wins Brazil, maybe they'll triple up points for Abu Dhabi so he has a shot at beating Nico.

I'm glad Seb said what he did. Everyone wanted to say that, but didn't for some reason or another. His comments were made within team communications, so I hope there is no blowback for it. If he said it in an after race interview, then that is a different story.

Vettel flipped out for good reason.

Verstappen was only told by his team to move as a precaution, whereas Ferrari told Vettel twice that Verstappen has been told to give the place up (implying that it was an FIA call). Vettel then obviously (and rightfully) thought that Verstappen was backing Vettel into Ricciardo.

Verstappen did the right thing too, he saw that Hamilton didn't get penalized for doing the same thing (but actually to another extreme by nailing it across), so when his team told him to move, he remembered the first corner and thought ''I'm not giving up 3rd place based on a hunch''. He actually told the team (not broadcasted) to ''let me know'' if the FIA says anything.

In the end, we're all losers in this. Again.

Side by side video of Hamilton start and Verstappen cut. If anything, Rosberg was closer to Hamilton than Vettel was to Verstappen!

What is with race control? Are those old guys napping during the race? They are so slow to react to incidents.

Speaking strictly of going by the new rules, the penalty is correct of course. But it's going completely against what RACING is. If this sets the tone for ''new F1'', I'm done and will give up on the sport I've loved since I was a young kid.

They're old. They have a little nap during the day. Also impaired vision is a side effect of becoming old, presumably they can barely see what happens.

This is a total disgrace, A red Bull driver intentionaly blocked vettel and made him get caught by the other bull, and then they penalize the Ferrario for defending himself...this is nothing else then revenge from whiting...i'm done with this crap, F.1 is oficially over for me this year...i won't watch any more races....if i wan't to watch a circus they should at least dress charlie as a clown.

    Here is the problem

Instead of talking about the great racing and exciting finish, we are talking about the FIA rules, who bumped into who and when, and radio communication.

There was no great racing. After T4 lap 1 it was a procession for 68 laps, and at the faintest whiff of excitement, we where told it was illegal. What was quite simply great defending (Still leaving 1.5 cars width), is illegal these days.

Just when you think they cannot screw things up any worse than they already have, the FIA and their Minions of Darkness manage to drag the whole affair deeper into the cesspool.

Their patently picayune administration of the rules degrades the entire sport.

Nope Verstappen didn't intentionally block Vettel to drive him into Ricciardo. Red Bull instructed Verstappen to move over, but Verstappen went by T1 ruling that it was seemingly acceptable to cut the track, so he told the team to wait for FIA call (which didn't come). Verstappen simply defended his position (even after the track cut).

Ferrari on the otherhand, and this is why Vettel was so pissed, told Vettel on the radio that Verstappen had been instructed to move over, it was implied it was a call from the FIA but it wasn't. Vettel assumed Verstappen backed Vettel into Ricciardo, that's why he swore at Charlie.

However you are right that the penalty is complete and utter bull****. Left more than enough room. But these are ''the new rules''. If I see more of this idiotery I'm done as well and find a new sport to watch.

+1. It was typical NBC/Sky coverage. 1st and 2nd were way out in front of the pack with no contenders so they focused on other contests. It is not NBC/Sky's fault, as these races have been predictable for the past three years barring a failure or crash by Nico or Ham. Only recently have the Red Bulls have been closing the gap and maybe challenging the Mercedes.

Vettel was right with his comments from the information he had.

It was FOM who decided to broadcast those messages. They didn't paint the complete picture as they missed out half the conversations between Ferrari and Vettel and Verstappen and Red Bull.

I can't be the only one that's ****ing disgusted by the constant **** talking of team members about other drivers. Lauda/wolff on Verstappen, Horner/Marko on Vettel. It's ****ing embarrassing.
