Hi, I have a line on a 1975 GT4 2&2. 16,800 miles, one owner, service records including a current major. A very good color change from green to red with a tan interior. No rust & great gaps/seams. The seller is getting back to me with a price after the major gets done next week. What's it worth? Wish it was still green !! That would look cool on that body. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    Three years ago? $25-30K.

Now? $35-50K-ish. Lots of variables here, as you know. Books, tools, overall condition, maintenance records, list goes on and on.

Hagerty's numbers are all over the place. I'm guessing not a ton of data to work with. Ebay provides some insight as well.

I have lusted after a GT4 for some time, so I casually watch the market.

My thought was $40K. A color change in the Porsche world is typically at least a 25% hit. Don't see many color changes in the "F" world.

color change does not effect value on older F cars. Good paint=+, bad paint=- doesn't matter what color, generally.

Red=good, that's why they call it "resale red"

1 owner low miles, no rust, records, tools, recent major service. If the sell for less than 60k their giving it away!

Maybe with books and tools, maybe. I'm still not convinced that a rising tide raises "all Ferrari ships."

And, the market is cooling, not heating up.

We also don't know where the car is. "rust free" can be a relative term. :D

If it was in Europe or the UK. It would be way more than $60k.

Is it a us model or a euro spec.

US spec - 25-35 was 6 years ago which is when I found mine. Low miles one owner would be added value. Today even in a cooled off market 60k+, last summer possibly into 80K.

Euro spec in US then 70-80k easily.

Anything less and you have yourself a good deal. I don't believe in rising tides, baloney. People thought that about the 246 dino 20 years ago. Show me today a low mile one owner 246 for 150k or a low mile one owner 308gt4 for 35k and I'd buy both on the spot.

Keep us posted on the developments it would be great to have you in the community.

Huge collectability difference in a 246 Dino and a 308GT4 Dino, wouldn't you say?

Most arguments for, or against value come from the two camps; buyers who lowball, and owners/potential sellers who shoot for the moon. I'm neither, but I am a fan of the cars.

At the end of the day, the 308GT4 is not the most loved model out there, but it requires the same big bucks to repair. Many of them are pretty beat up, I've seen several very ratty examples over the years. Few are as pristine as advertised, and most have a LOT of deferred maintenance issues which will put you underwater pretty quickly. Pay $50K for a "driver" invest $25K in maintenance and repairs, and do you have a $75K car? Probably not. Now paint it, for $15K or more, do you have a $90K car? Again, no.

The gap between a one owner GT4 at $35K, when a very good one might be worth $35K more than that, and the same 246GT that you suggest at $150K which is in fact well north of $300K is an apples and oranges comparison. Sure both are 2X equations, but the checks written are significantly different. In fact, there's a VERY clean 246GT for sale here that's almost $400K.

Look at it another way. If you were in the market for a 308GT4, would you pay $80K for a clean one owner car? Or more? Not would you sell yours for that. Would you buy one for $90K, $100K? I doubt it.

That's who sets the market, buyers, not sellers.

we won't agree and that is ok. this is not the thread to debate either. I was around when going to a concourse those responsible for placing cars did not allow the 246 Dino to sit with the Ferrari's but over in the boonies with fiat's. I was young back then and never understood why, I think they are equally beautiful cars regardless of engine size. People did come around on the dino's though.

Your points all well taken- condition and originality is everything on what to offer/market value.

Do you have pics? A no story car that is mint and serviced should be in the 60K to 80K range or even higher depending on year etc..

I don't get this ranking on the GT4?? I think these cars are sought after. I know others on this site who have lusted after the GT4's and think they're one of - if not the coolest Ferrari. I love the way they're built. All of the top skins are aluminum wrapped about a steel tube frame. The leather work is beautiful. For some reason, the cars are lighter than the PF 308's (I love those too!) and you can feel it. They handle awesome! The look is so futuristic, they still look new. Also, you can't judge a Ferrari negatively for being "tatty". For many, this is simply a barn find which draws another group of buyers.

As far as putting a figure on it, that's a tough call as the buyer must evaluate urgency of purchase against market trends, availability of comps etc. If you're in a hurry to buy, you might miss out on "that perfect car"; but, you could wait, and that car you were considering might be, "the one that got away". I might suggest getting to know whatever car you're considering and comp's inside and out as best as you can so that you can know what you're facing to either bring the car to the standard you desire, or accept whatever issues there may be and weigh this into your own personal appraisal based on what's available.

Lastly, the market could be a moving target which might take years to move up or down, but in the meantime, you don't have your car. I don't look back on my cars based on market timing with pride or contempt. I'm just glad I found one I liked and made sense to me and moved on it. I have lost cars because I didn't act fast enough, but I'm still happy and proud of the ones I did get.

    Good luck in your hunt!

Well if they get this much for the ebay one below, the car posted about in this thread should be about $100k car. But, I really doubt the ebay one below is going to get close to ask....

Thanks for all the thoughts. The major is still in progress. The seller will get me his "asking price" when it's done. It is truly rust free. Bought at Continental Motors in IL. then moved to the Southwest a few years later. Can't find a speck of original green paint anywhere on the car. It will need tires and a seat seam stitched up. How many of the 2,800 or so 308 gt4's are left? I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

When you get a chance, post some pictures.

As to your question about 308GT4 survivors, I think it's safe to say significantly more than half, but when I think back to concours events, I saw more 246GT and GTS than I ever saw GT4's at a concours, so as an unloved for many years model, more may have been scrapped or abandoned over the years, and the value numbers just don't warrant rebuilding a really beat up one, unlike the 246GT numbers.

Of course a guy like Carbon McCoy, keeper of all Ferrari Serial Numbers, could probably give you a much better estimation.

Look in the filler neck, or inside the doors, or even under the carpet. Overspray in these areas is rarely addressed in a color change.

It is a shame "so many" end up red and now fashion has turned back to "various colors" IMO.

    Good luck on the buy!

The GT4 does have it's fan base, and is largely considered "better handling" than the far more popular 308GTB.
A 1975 will be considered "early NON CAT" and is a very fine engine.

Both are good cars to start with Ferrari vintage ownership!!
