Bob, your gorgeous GTC has earned the right to chill out a bit. ;) Melissa and I are coming finally at the last minute and will be staying at the Marriott. The Westin was full. We'll be tooling around in the Porsche Macan. Hope to see y'all around at some point.

Class car rolls into lagoon at Hilton Head Island car show | The Island Packet

    BY JOAN MCDONOUGH
    [email protected]

What surely began as a wonderful weekend for the owners of an award-winning classic car ended on a soggy note. One of the cars shown at the Hilton Head Island Motoring Festival & Concours d’Elegance at Port Royal Plantation rolled into a lagoon behind it on Sunday.

The car that got away was a 1938 Packard 1605 Super Eight convertible sedan in the American Classics 1925-1948 class, according to the festival’s program and confirmed by a spokeswoman for the event. The car was almost completely submerged, except for a few inches of the top of the car. A professional diver and a tow truck company came to rescue the car from the water.

“This was most unfortunate,” Carolyn Vanagel, festival president said. “We feel badly for the owners whose car had just won best-of-class.”

Bystanders on the green said once the car started rolling, a couple of people tried to stop it, but they were no match for the weight of the vehicle. No information is currently available on how the car rolled away, the value of the vehicle or the estimated amount of damage.

Who was that with the Lancia Fulvia? I chatted for a bit, but don't recall his name on Fchat.

As in previous years, we truly enjoyed the Saturday event.
We took our 1967 ALFA instead of the GTC.
Not by any means a show car, it is an everyday driver and shows some its 101,000 miles of life, including a badly worn driver's seat.
Parked right in the middle of a line of beautiful late model Ferraris it appeared to be the "ugly duckling".
But, I was surprised at how much attention it drew.
People looked the car over, asked all sorts of questions about it and I was even asked if I'd like to sell it.
What really surprised Harriet and I was the ALFA being selected to receive a "Crescent" award, with which I was not the least bit familiar.
And, check out the carrying capacity - everything in the photo was inside the car including Harriet and I.

In all, a really fine weekend - the organizers did their usual first-class job.

Strange Concours for us. Left Charleston a little after 9 and got to the Beaufort turnoff where one of the cars in our caravan, a 2013 BMW x5 Mperformance 4.4L TT with 70K miles, lost its engine. We spent 2.5 hrs at a gas station waiting for a tow truck to take it back to Charleston.
We finally made it to the Concours and saw about a 100 people gathered around a lagoon taking pics. Roof sticking out of the water.
All the landmarks gone. So many trees down. Not Hurricane Hugo level of destruction, but really bad.
The show seemed a little disjointed. Maybe our earlier issues put me in a weird mood, IDK.
The broken BMW had an extended warranty and the bill said $27k. Very interesting day to say the least.

Sorry to hear your story. I really thought things came out good considering the circumstances. It was a very much needed morale booster for the Island to have the show go on. Don't know what happened with the Packard but it sure is a shame.

We are still digging out and making repairs and will be for at least another six months. A big thank you to anyone who was a part of it!

It was an honor to participate!
The organizers did their usual excellent job of putting the show together.
We've been to many shows but HHI is definitely our favorite.
We took my future father-in-law, 96 years old and a Pearl Harbor survivor. He had never been to a car show and he loved it.
He and I walked the entire field.

Furthermore, we always find new and interesting restaurants to visit. This past time we tried three new (to us) places:
    Wise Guys
    Sage Room
    Aunt Chiladas
    Enjoyed every one.
We had two really good breakfasts at Stacks but were disappointed at Bistro 843 - probably won't go back.
