PatchandTedgate claim their master.... Steve Herbert resigns from Victorian cabinet after using driver to chauffeur pet dogs - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
Well what wasn't a great day (no swim due to shark alarm) was just spoiled completely by the news Leonard Cohen is dead.... Just give thanks I got to see him a few years ago. Probably one of the best concerts ever. Shalom, Leonard. Where's the tears emoji?
Oh heck, you've just spoilt what has been a pretty crappy year.... This news has really upset this little black duck.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrLk4vdY28Q
+1 very sad. Bird on a wire is a favourite of mine. Love the intro from the guy on the Telecaster in this 2013 clip (same concert I think). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lWcqbVKhCs
talking of Telecasters, this Joe Bonamassa version of Bird on a Wire is a thing of beauty. Wait for the interlude at 6:23. No effects pedal, just perfect control and perfect tuning. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjpBhvegMJw
RIP, truly unique talent. Interestingly bought a house on the Greek Island of Hydra and lived there for 20 years, becoming fluent in Greek, not an easy feat as an adult Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wow, I never knew that. Definitely a mean feat learning the Greek language later in life. Nicole's Grandma LOVED him and Halleluja was her favourite song that was played at her funeral in 2010. She used to play it all the time when we visited her near daily as she lived with Nicole's parents. RIP L Cohen.
I appreciate we don't venture into P&R in this Section of FerrariChat too often, however this cartoon piqued my interest. Surely I cannot be the only one whom feels this cartoon is racist. Image Unavailable, Please Login
where have you been for the last 3 months while the lefty press has been going gaga over this? What racism? An Aboriginal authority (the cop) is holding a delinquent child (have you looked at the stats for juvenile offenders in regional Australia?) and asking his father to get involved, who is not interested (ditto the stats for absentee fathers). This is a real problem and you can't pretend it away. Go and visit somewhere like Hermansburg in NT and you will be ashamed that there are people living like this in our country. All the left want is more money, ignoring the reality that welfare dependency and "sit down" money has done irreparable harm to Aboriginal culture. I recommend you Google a few of Noel Pearson's speeches on the subject.
I don't think it is at all. Truth can be painful but it's still the truth. What are the parents doing whilst these kids steal, take drugs, sniff glue/petrol etc? Much the same is the message. Notice all the players in the cartoon are indigenous. Make them white and put a Mt Druitt/Logan sign in the background. Is that racist?
The part I find racist is the "Father's" reply. I spent a week in an Aboriginal mission which was run by the Uniting Church. I can tell you many stories about "sacred sites" and how a carton of beer suddenly makes a sacred site suddenly not a sacred site. I will have to respectfully disagree with Ian, Greg and PAP.
Sorry, mate, you live in a sheltered,South East Corner(and all who live there...thinking they're holy as though)..point of view. Having been on many fishing/camping trips over the past 16 years up here,I/we..the blokes, venture through various townships that are 'off limits' to whiteys, apart from taking the allowed direct route through that location. Generally when you have to stop/slow down whilst going through those locations, the whiteys are given short shrift and are held in disdain. There are,of course,as when a couple of us went to the Coloured Sands past Hopevale, exceptions to the rule.We encountered a broken down Murri Troopy who were part of the community and blocking the road, due to a breakdown, to the community headquarters/paypoint,but not to the Coloured Sands. We knew that the cost to go to the Coloured Sands was $10,not a big cost given what we were about to experience. My co-traveller was trying to press the money into the locals' hand but she wouldn't have any of it....effectively saying...it's everyone's land ,please enjoy it. This is a slightly different arguement to Wes' initial statement and thinking. Spending some time with an organised,SANITISED period of time in an indigenous community will never give anyone the true situation that really occurs there/here. I would be quite surprised the Uniting church did not give a 'heads-up' to the community you went to. I'm sorry Wes,you are incorrect with your thinking and your point of view re the cartoon. If you went to Yarrabah,Aurakun and Kowanyama, you would see the worst of what is like to be a child...black,white or brindle.
Klink, I haven't said what I experienced where I went. You are making assumptions, and we all know what that leads to. I went to a place called Balgo in W.A. in around 1981. Balgo is an 11 hour drive south of Halls Creek in W.A. To say it is extremely remote is an understatement. What I saw there was most definitely not sanitised. What I saw there in that week has stayed in my memory for 35 years. But that is not what i was talking about in my first post. I appreciate that crime, bashings, grog, family violence are rampant and if I lived in a small rural town I would have a different perspective. Especially if I owned some sort of business. You are talking about the real world, I am talking about that cartoon being published in a a major Australian newspaper. What I am saying is that that cartoon to my eyes anyway, is clearly racist. This is why I think that way. This is the definition of the word "racist." Racist As a noun 1. a person who believes that a particular race is superior to another. "I had a fear of being called a racist" synonyms: racial bigot, racialist, xenophobe, chauvinist; More antonyms: multicultural, tolerant As an adjective adjective: racist 1. having or showing the belief that a particular race is superior to another. Now, I will grant that that cartoon could be argued to not display some of those definitions above, however the extract from Wikipedia more supports my argument. From Wikipedia: "Racism is a product of the complex interaction in a given society of a race-based worldview with prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. Racism can be present in social actions, practices, or political systems (e.g., apartheid) that support the expression of prejudice or aversion in discriminatory practices. The ideology underlying racist practices often includes the idea that humans can be subdivided into distinct groups that are different in their social behavior and innate capacities and that can be ranked as inferior or superior.[1] Racist ideology can become manifest in many aspects of social life. Associated social actions may include xenophobia, otherness, segregation, hierarchical ranking, supremacism, and related social phenomena." Again, to my eyes that cartoon is racist, notwithstanding the reality which you have outlined, which I do not dispute. We are not talking about the same thing. I'm talking about a cartoon and you are talking about the way it is. And I have no doubt it is a lot lot worse than what you have described. Whilst I don't have the answers, and am not purporting to, and it is clear that throwing federal funds at the problem hasn't worked, I still feel that it is a national disgrace.
I did say what I said was sideways of your original statement, but it all comes from the same place. I guess you're saying the cartoon was racist because a white fella penned it. Dissect the cartoon(penned by a white fella) Murri cop tells inebriated(or on the way to getting..)Murri dad,he needs to get his fatherly duties in order. Murri dad is,either 'cos he's fathered too many kids or is so alcohol/drug affected,he remember the name. This situation could also be said of many alcohol/drug affected whiteys,as well. Unfortunately it's more prevalent on Murri communities. Perhaps Charlie Hebdo needs a few more Muslims on it's payroll.
I think if Bill Leak had made a "double spread" of this cartoon together with the Mt Druitt version Greg suggested, the 'racist' tag could have been avoided and the real issue of drop-kick parents (who come in every color) might have been a valuable tool. The single thing we need to change in Australia to improve all society is to make people truly responsible for their kids.
