Does a clutch replacement "really" have to be done by a $$$$ "Authorized" Ferrari Dea

My beautiful 2001 308 Modena has an "aftermarket" clutch performed by it's previous owner's independent mechanic. It's said to be a problem because the facing isn't the same as a "real" Ferrari clutch and so it tends to grab, especially going into first and from first to second on the F1 transmission. I'l learning to live with it by feathering the throttle a bit on departing but it's obviously going to have to be replaced someday.

I'm told by some that it can only be replaced by an "Authorized" Ferrari repair facility ($$$$$) because there is computer adjustment involved and they are the only ones that have the computer which costs $20,000. I'm also told by some that an experienced independent mechanic can replace the clutch with a "real" Ferrari one and it will work just fine for about half the price.

I'm getting nervous about the cost of this, said to be as much as $6000 via a "real" Ferrari dealer.

Does anyone have any experience?

An F1 clutch needs to be setup by someone with a Ferrari compatible scantool. In addition to the Ferrari-specific SD2 or SD3 that you typically find at a dealer, there are a couple others (Leonardo and Auto Enginuity) that some shops use that can do the job. Take it to someone that can try to sort it out. Driving it like this will use it up if it hasn't already.

 

'PIS' is the parameter you need adjusted by a shop with the proper Ferrari tools mentioned above. There may be hope for your aftermarket clutch with an adjustment vs full replacement. $6,000 parts and labor for a new clutch sounds like a good deal.

 

Its very ironic and i am deeply saddened to have found a universal scan tool, in China, costing about US $650.00, that can perform 360/430 f1 fluid drain and PIS adjusting, together with a host of other manufactures including Lambo, BMW, Volvo, you name it.
The sadness is especially profound after purchasing the leonardo tool (single model) for US $8000.

I met this guy when I was purchasing a 300zx in China and the guy couldn't even know how to use it when the f430 in his shop was having some gear change problem.

I held the tool in my hand, with some tears rolling, and found it shows multiple f430 TCU versions that you can select.

 

Can you provide some details on the tool?

I was buying a 300zx (dream car, by the way) and this shop was selling it.

I walk up to the shop and saw a f430, I asked him about the f430 and he said he's getting problems with the stumble while stepping on the gas paddle

I told him maybe your PIS is too tight, he was like: what? what PIS?

I didn't bother to tell him what it is but asked: do you have a leonardo? He said no, but I have this.
thus he showed me the tool. I tried it on the car, only to be mesmerized by its functionalities on the f430. Pretty much every function on my leonardo was covered.

ok, a little more story if you like:
I did adjust the f430's pis and test drove it. Much better , said he.
I bought the 300zx and then left.
he later called me saying that he had a problem with the dash light about differential.
I told him to replace the solenoid , 90% of the problem was caused by the solenoid.
he did and problem solve. He now idols me like a Ferrari god. heck!

I am not too familiar with f430. I heard the PIS is self-adjusting? but on this scan tool I can adjust it.
I was following my 360 knowledge on his 430.

What im thinking is, its not a knockoff, rather, some genious chinese guy cracked the Magneti Marrelli.

a sort of reverse engineering.

Seriously, i forgot the brand, but its in chinese, even the error descriptions are in chinese
not sure if they have an english version.

If we have a group of people who are serious, I can make some effort to find the tool.

I don't care bout' the chinese at that price... I'll dynamically google the translation at that price.

 

Sorry I don't for a moment believe the Chinese came up with the technology. More likely they stole the technology. One of China's strategy to catch and surpass the West is to use stolen technology as a springboard. A lot easier to steal and copy than try to come up with it from scratch.

um.....I got an unfinished Ph.D in Ele. engineering so I should have some say in this.

cracking a chip made in the early 00's isn't difficult.
Difficulty level on cracking/copying a leonardo/sd2/3 is on par with that of cracking a Magretti Marrelli.

That Mag.Marelli isn't cutting edge technology anyways. Just like you wouldn't say a cigarette lighter is "technology".

Agree with that springboard analogy, its actually pretty efficient and they(or maybe "we"?) improved some of the ideas generated from the west, such as ebay.

 

Sounds like a copy of Auto Enginuity software if it covers all those other manufacturers. Host it in an SD/ST-5 like case and you are set. Have to ask the AE guys if they have a Chinese version.

 

Back to the OP. No, I did my '03 360 F1 myself.

 

Please make some effort. I'll gladly pay for a picture/name/model of the unit!

 

There is a back door to manually set the PIS in the 360....... without the SD2.

It was taught me by a Ferrari tech.

I've done it. It works and the car is great!


As for the scan tools...... I AM INTERESTED!!!
