    Hi Guys & Gals,

Newbie here, with a question. If someone were to buy a brand new replacement engine from Ferrari, would either the factory or dealer stamp the new engine with the car's VIN that it's going into?

I don't know that much about Ferrari's yet (but learn quickly), but in the collector car world, that's frowned upon although some people/companies do it.

I didn't think it was even legal, but I can't find anything online that says it is.

I'd guess Ferrari might if done with the in house restoration program. Buckle up for that though.
Anyone else is committing fraud. Ferrari is "special".

The engine number and the chassis number of Ferraris are not the same identical number for both anymore since the early seventies on most cars, so they are not "matched" in the sense "identical" anymore like they were before.

When the V8 range of cars became common, a new engine could be fitted in a 308 GTB or GTS, a Mondial, etc...and there were different series of engines (three for instance for the 328s: Euro non catalysed, US catalysed, Swiss catalysed); so engines have their own numbering systems, whith some peculiarities and mysteries that remain to be solved (the 3,2 liter V8s serie for instance has a "jump" in its numbering from # 3300 directly to 10400...)

For instance, my 1989 328 GTB chassis 81085 has engine number 17330 from its birth at the factory; it is her original engine, and the number typed on her warranty card. Her transmission is 3916 F106MB; those numbers are kept in the car's file by the factory.

If a replacement engine brand new from the Ferrari factory is bought, it will come with its own number in the engine sequence already on its number/type plate, and if the replacement is done by the factory's network, the change of engines will be recorded in the car's file (engine number xxxxx replaced by engine number xxxxx). For each model of engine, the factory has built a small number of extra, brand new engines, as ready for replacing a broken one, but, as said above, these are already numbered.

If the engine is replaced out of the official network, for instance by an engine taken from another car (crashed, etc...), and if this is not signaled to the factory, then the original numbers of the car as produced by the factory (chassis/engine/transmission) will not correspond anymore with the factory's files and it will affect the car's resale value.

For older cars, those of the fifties and sixties, engien and chassis number are totally matched: it is the same number. So any replacement is easy to detect. If not done and documented by Ferrari, it will of course affect the value of the car...

When getting replacement engines from Ferrari for modern cars sometimes we got it with the original # stamped in the block and sometimes we got one with a different number and Ferrari updated their records to reflect the change. We never knew in advance what was in the box.

Wow, that's good information! The reason I asked is because a customer of mine has a customer who needs one. My boss has access to a brand new replacement motor, and the customer was asking about the VIN issue. Now I can sound like I'm an old hand at Ferrari's and know exactly what I'm talking about! Thanks for your help!
