Is there a conclusion yet about the chassis number of the car iffered at the Duemille Ruote auction?
I see it is now listed with the engine number instead.

Otherwise, quite a few cars there I'd be quite happy with at their high estimates!

    Best,

    Jack.

    Hello Jack,

It is in process, I am helping RM Sothebys identify it, along with Maserati Classiche, this coming week more will be known as the RM staff go back from London to Italy to see the cars again, examine this one more thoroughly and prepare for the auction itself, patience please:)

As to the estimates they have had to set so many and for numerous cars it is hard to pick the right numbers, but in any case the market will decide. I think it will be a madhouse.

Speaking of auctions, no surprise 192 did not sell at the Artcurial Champs Elysees October 30 sale.
    Automobiles sur les Champs 10 - Vente N° 3117 - Lot N° 171 | Artcurial

This car has been on the market for years, ever since Symbolic Motorcars took it as part trade from Japan to California years ago, then it went to Chicago Classic cars around 2007-2008 then to Germany where it was on the market a long time still with an interior blending colors in total mismatch. Apparently a Swiss then bought it and at least redid the interior but what the car really needs is to be put back to the Blu metalizzato it originally had. The white combined with the less popular auto box have hampered it all this time.

    Best regards,

    Marc

Thanks Graeme, nice for the auctioneer that it beat their estimate, a reasonable one which is too rare. That is about right price wise considering the condition and a locked in isolated market.
The owner will have quite a bit of work but not so many cars in Oz, even less so on the market so no choice.

Odd that one Campagnolo wheel is missing, wonder what the story is?

    Best regards,

    Marc

    Hi Marc
Not sure about the missing wheel, I had two spare until last week.
If it were me I would get a set of the Compomotive replicas any way.

They are getting cheaper by the day with the Aussie dollar climbing against the Pound.
Time for some Aussie cars to come home. :)

Hi Graeme, I would guess he terminally damaged the missing wheel hence a good look at the suspension is warranted.

Costly shipping but yes the more classics the more the hobby can grow.

Do you have a link for those Compomotive replicas? I know at least one K in Europe with the wrong wheels so that would be of interest to him and others.

    Best regards,

    Marc

    Hello all,

    Two things:

-There will be more news and details from RM ahead of the November 25-27 Due Mille Ruote Milan auction regarding the Khamsin entered in it, but it is not for me to say at this stage so please don't ask here or by email/PM. It certainly is an interesting car, though little is known about its condition but that is the case for almost the entire seized collection. I will probably attend the auction which will be a madhouse.

-Here is a startling story I was told by Tom Clark Jr who with his father Tom sr ran the Steering Wheel, which was the official Maserati dealership in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They were actually the top selling Maserati dealership in the US at the time.

They sold one Khamsin, one of the magnificent seven fly yellow cars as I call them (all US market K's) to a Doctor: Anthony Purcell. He enjoyed the car in South Florida, life was good and one day he drove it to Ft Lauderdale executive airport, parked it in his airplane hangar and took off for Texas in his small aircraft, probably a single or twin prop.

Then he disappeared over the gulf of Mexico and was never, ever found. He was declared missing and dead.

In the days after his disappearance Tom Jr was asked by police and the family to procure spare keys for the Khamsin and brought them to the airport, the car was then sold on...

I don't yet know which K it is but will try to determine it shouldn't be that hard as there probably was only one yellow K sold via the Steering Wheel.

    Best regards,

    Marc

With permission from RM I can now confirm that the car is not 096, which I confirmed to RM is with friends of mine in Vienna, but 032.

It was clear that the chassis rail had ben restamped and of course the chassis plate is missing.

Not only is the engine number 032 but with help from Fabio Collina at Maserati Classiche we cross-referenced all the cars I had zero information on and the silver black early cars (as this is obviously an early car) there were no silver black cars in that subgroup...however 032 was originally gold and RM a few days ago had another close look at the car...and there is gold under the silver paint:).

    So voila AM120.032 it is:).

Delivered 14 February 1974 to a dealer in Rome in oro Kelso (medium gold)/black.

RM Sothebys will clarify its status imminently.

I am not involved other than having helped solve the small riddle.

    Best regards,

    Marc

    True detective Marc! Well done.
That's a handsome original colour too.
I am fascinated to see the results of many of the lots in this auction.
I am with you in thinking is will quite possibly be a madhouse...

    Best regards.

Now the question is Why? As much as we love them Khamsins aren't exactly high on the exotic car desirability list. Stolen? Avoiding Taxes?

You mean most people do not know them enough to appreciate them:) Thankfully more and more people are aware of how special they are to drive which is one of the points of this thread:).
Obviously one assumes it was stolen long ago (and this involves just my opinion) like perhaps another Khamsin that emerged from 20 years of storage in Calabria recently and is now in Nice, France in awful shape with its new owner scratching his head wondering what to do...

Don't forget Khamsins were very expensive when new they were not only among the top 5 fastest cars in the world but right up there price wise.

There were many ways people avoided taxes in Italy (such as secretaries or grand aunts having cars registered in their name instead of the actual owner and user, but I have never seen actual chassis number tampering to avoid taxes.

    Best regards,

    MS

Great! Maserati Classiche can probably deliver the Autovettura and Carrozzeria numbers? These numbers may have the same last two digits, you see that with more early cars, like #114 in Japan a few posts back, where both numbers end with 54.

Some videos I didn't see before:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SxcZUalopEQ (2011, Belgian RHD Khamsin)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibB7hlVhppk (2015, Paris, Khamsin and Marcello Gandini)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yup3cGIgqgc (2014, Khamsin at Maserati stand in Asia)

    Hello AMLC,

Not sure, the info Fabio Collina of Maserati Classiche provided me did not contain those two numbers and not quite certain that the last two digits always match as the body shells were not used sequentially but as needed so they were shuffled.

There is now an addenda on the car's catalog page:

    1975 Maserati Khamsin | Duemila Ruote 2016 | RM Sotheby's

So contact RM for more details:)

Re the videos: the light blue RHD car in Belgium is 323.
The K being signed by Marcello G is owned by the head of design of Citroen, Peugeot and DS, it is 182.
The Hong Kong K is NOT 427 also shown in 100th anniversary celebrations in China and offered at auction in Hong Kong this past summer. I have to dig some more, I have this one but back about it later.

    Best regards,

    Marc

    Hello AMLC

I think the car in asia is in fact 335, as sold by Bonhams at the Royal Air Force Museum on April 30th 2012, probably in Honk Kong now.
Special as it had a tow bar, and still has...

    Best regards, Roger

Thanks for pointing that out Roger, had not noticed it, it is not something you look for is it?!:) Surprised that someone recently went ahead and brought a Khamsin to Hong Kong from the UK, something that had not been done in many years.
339 a silver car used to live there but has been back in the UK, 427 a gold car was shown a couple of times in 2014 and put up for auction in June in Hong Kong, not selling despite being stunning and having extraordinarily low mileage, another gold car was in Hong Kong in the past but has been in Australia for years owned by Dilip Sen.
There is another car that I have to identify which was seen in Hong Kong in the 1990's (by former K owner Bart) and which was the same color as the towbar car seen in the video: I thought that was the one but obviously not.

It is very surprising that the new owner has not gotten rid of the unsightly towbar...oh and Richard rest assured it is the only one as far as I know!

    Best regards,

    Marc
