Any recommendations? I'm trying to find a qualified engine rebuilder who can rebuild a 328 engine without charging an arm and a leg.

    Define 'qualified'

    Define 'rebuild'

And, you get what you pay for. At the end of the day it is, "just an engine", many shops could take it apart and put it back together. A lesser number would do a nice job. Even less would do a perfect job. As with parts, generally aftermarket parts to OE specs and not to OE spec are available, so the labour.

There will be several shops that claim they can rebuild your 328 motor.
There are only a few that can do it right.
Make sure you get a written 1 year warranty. If they won't warranty the work, walk away.

I love 328's but honestly the cost to rebuild a motor is of dubious value in the big picture. It is such a high percentage of the overall value of the car it may become a better idea to sell as is and get another car.

"Cost effective" and "Ferrari Engine rebuild" are almost never appropriate in the same paragraph let along sentence.

My guess is that they way you say this you would consider something in the neighborhood of $20K as excessive. More if you need pistons or liners.

    This is it.

Tear it down and "fix what is wrong", or if truly high miles and "worn out" I would think the Trutlands "send core/exchange" would be the way to go.

Paying retail $$ for everything you need would not be effective, in my mind.

A quality exchange motor will not cost one penny less than a quality rebuild motor done by your shop on your existing motor. Unless of course you believe a middle man will magically reduce costs.

They lose money on every deal, but make it up, in volume"..???
    :D :D :D

I hear you, they obviously would be moving individual parts mark up into a consolidated total.

I would also imagine they reuse every part that "passed inspection".

We know there are no OEM pistons, but out of multiple motors, you would (eventually) have eight of them....

I hope I never have to answer the question, your original answer would be correct.

    "Pick another car"....

I was a friend of Teds and I would say this to his face so...under his ownership rebuilt components were done by a contractor and Ted was very thrifty so you figure it out.
