That's a ring nut, so you'll need to buy or make the appropriate tool.

Don't try to knock if off with a drift!

It's also a taper-fit on the steering column. Sometimes they are tough to get loose. The hub is fairly flimsy. It can be tricky to attach a puller without damaging things.

Snap on and Mac make that. I actually have a Snap on antenna mast kit that is the same as that. Works great.

Is there different sizes for ring nut wrenches. All I find don't seem to give sizes.

A 28mm ringnut is used for the 348 steering wheel. We've got one we can loan if you ring me on Monday at Ricambi America.

Thanks I will likely order one so I have it. I find it ironic that I was pretty close in my original post when I said I expected to find a 28 mm hex nut and it ended up being a 28 mm ring nut.

    Just to add to this:

Be aware also that replacement hubs can be hard to find if you do damage yours during removal!

Are you saying the hub is has a tapered fit to the shaft and thus after I get the screw off I'll need a puller too?

    Possible.
Even though with a simple taper fit with a key, they can be very stuck.

Yes - With some very careful/gentle pulling too!

Hopefully it will just release and come away with a puller, but they don't always, and the design of the hub means that it can be damaged/distorted very easily.

I'll first try to attach the steering again and coax it off.

Be very careful. I managed to crack my hub using an assortment of shop fabricated tools. The hub has steel fingers with an aluminum casting so it will break easily. I did take some dimensions if you need to make a puller. FWIW.

Jason, I have the socket I can lend you. It'll save you $85-130 from Baum tools.
Just send me a PM with your address, in promises it'll be returned.

I had no luck with the usual steering wheel pullers, but a bearing puller worked great, can include as well.

It is not a scare. Be careful with the normal puller. It will rip out the hole and you will buy a new hub. Use something other than a screw in puller.

Not sure. Looking at the pics I took I think it doesn't matter. As in, I think that it's all the same unit so if you pull from the large or small ring it will pull off. Hard to say however as I only have the pics I took at the time. Make sure you pull evenly and go slow.

That looks like the horn contact ring, which you do NOT want to scar or bend.

I hope you're using a three jaw puller...

If you get the puller fairly tight and the hub still doesn't pop loose try giving the center bolt of the puller a few moderate whacks with a hammer. The combination of tension and impact will often break the bond in the taper.

I agree it looks to be attached to the horn ring..... too late now but!!! The way to go is to loosen the hub nut a few turns,re fit the actual steering wheel and gently pull and rock the hub loose without a puller. problem is you have to have done it a thousand times before so you get a feel for it as it pops off against the hub nut...

That's too far back. You just want the metal part of the hub, not further back. It should pop right off.

Yup it was attached to the horn ring. I did make some small dents in it but hopefully not big enough to make a difference in function or feel. When I sensed something wasn't right i loosened up the gear puller and came in here to ask you guys. I reattached to the the edges of the hub and popped it off. Scared me when it came off. Hub is undamaged and straight.
