Oh yeah, that would be the ultimate. Let's cross our fingers for Alonso. Arrived at Ferrari at the wrong time, same with McLaren. The guy deserves the best car ever.

What a shame, he was so promising, until that stupid rally accident.

    Makes sense. Thanks;).

I think MB is in the driver's seat as far as getting whoever they want, since everybody outside MB probably wants that seat, and nobody has won anything lately, therefore ruling out asking for big bucks. The only problem are the other teams, so they might not be able to get who they want. But I'd like to see somebody competitive, in case they retain their current advantage. I'm sure Bernie will put pressure to that effect for future ratings. We'll find out soon enough:).

I know it will never happen but an Alonso vs Hamilton all-out-duel-part-deux would be lovely. But ya, the merc board would never have it.

I think Ricciardo might be someone merc would like to poach. Positive & fast, who could race in harmony and personally, I think he would show Hamilton the exit.

Wehrlein being Toto's pet would probably be the most likely candidate though...albeit he sucks monkey balls. Jenson for a year might also be a stable choice, having been Hamilton's teammate for so long at McLaren.

Irregardless of who MB chooses, one thing is for sure, everyone will be scrambling to try to get that coveted seat at MB. And I guess we probably won't find out until next year!

How many times has it been said on here that any driver could win in a Merc? If they are still dominant next year then a clear #2 driver is exactly what Merc needs.

Jenson back to McLaren to help develop the car?

And that driver, most likely at the bottom of the list now, would most likely end up #2 under your scenario. But really hope for F1's sake that MB is not dominant next year. That was enough. I'd stop watching for sure.

Not sure Hamilton would want that, Jenson did beat him when they were teammates.

On the serious side, Ron left, Esso left...some dude call Alonso might be available. If i were Toto, I'd grab him with both hands.

The best F1 driver actually available right now is Jenson,if they can't organize to poach someone else he might just get lucky.Safe pair of hands who would keep it clean.

I would not be at all surprised if Vettel jumps ship,he seems increasingly cheesed off and frustrated at Ferrari,he is also German !

Toto now rates Ocon higher than Werewolf so they could take him and move Pascal to Force India. But i think they want a proven F1 driver,no rookies.

So Alonso is looming large, can do the biz, but can MB manage these two?

Why does everyone keep saying Button, Massa and Alonso ????
They are done, washed-up, has-been, retired drivers
Great guys, great drivers but no more
Replacing Nico will be a young(er) up-and-coming driver, not someone who cannot compete at the highest level and win again

    What's next ? Schumacher? Heidfeld ?

Realistic prospects are: Max (little chance, RB locks him down), Perez (good year), Hulk (German), etc.

Massa, just like Button has retired.

Having second thoughts about a decision isn't good.

    Exactly!!

I keep saying "Don't look in the past to solve the problem of the future".

The same when people want to bring Ross Brawn back, etc...

    Button and Massa have retired.

Alonso will never fight for a WDC, IMO: he missed the boat. Same about Kimi. Sorry to say, but they are yesterday's men.

The future is Sainz, Ocon, Verstappen, Ricciardo, Perez; they are at the beginning of their careers, and have many years to race.

Put Alonso in that Mercedes, and see if he won't fight for the WDC.

    I think not.

Driving uncompetitive cars for years has taken the edge of him, I think.

Still capable of flashes of brilliance from time to time, but not a sustained effort over one season to win a title. Same for Kimi.

I can see the logic for Sainz with a swap for Wehrlein

Sainz is unlikely to get a seat at RBR in the near future unless Ric to Ferrari plus Marko says the next Red Bull Rookies are not ready eg Gasly

Wehrlein would fill that gap and may yet come good so you give Red Bull the option to take him on after the first year with Merc paying his salary in 2017 - they might lose some engine data to Renault as a result but its not like he's an engineer

Would Mercedes take a big risk with another great German rookie, named Mick Schumacher? Now, that would beat any speculation.... And massive media attenttion!!!

Next year all is about developing the car. So Mercedes needs a driver with experience. On the other side, many driver contracts expire at the end of 2017. They can give Wehrlein a one year contract and will see, what happens.

You never know, he didn't make any extra friends this year with his bull****. Aside from a few gangsta types, are Mercedes selling any cars because of this fool? Doubt it, their corporate image is the complete opposite of the sort of person elton is
