Cracked electrical connector rubber boots for 456 & 550

All the Junior Power Timer connector rubber boots in my engine compartment are cracked. Where can I source some correct OEM protection boots with the bellows?

I want to maintain the correct OEM look but so far can only find non-bellows boot as replacement parts.

Story of my life, I think mine are all in the early stages of cracking. I think the non-bellows parts have thicker walls and this are less prone to cracking anyways.

 

Can you give us a source for the non-bellow boots please.

 

Wayne, not to sidetrack your thread, but periodically I do Google searches for "silicone Bosch connector boots". Lately, some sources have been turning up in the far east, however after purchasing some samples, they look & feel like the same material as the OEM boots, so I don't believe they're silicone.

I think the aftermarket is missing a great opportunity here, whether the boots are bellowed or non-bellowed, they should be fabricated in silicone, not the same old compound that the OEM boots were, which don't stand up to underhood temperatures for more than a few years.

Dave, Eagle Day have a limited selection of the non-bellow boots here: AMP Connectors/Terminals, and Marc Swanson at EFI Express can usually come up with most any boot/pin/connector combinations I need.

 

I actually like the non-bellows straight boot because they are stiffer (or at least the ones from SRI were). The rubber on the straight boot is thicker and should take more time to deteriorate. The bellows boot is super thin. The straight boot being stiffer and not so bendable moves some of the pressure off the pin to wire connection (the weakest point) and moves pressure away from the pin and down to the braided wire. There are reasons this can be an advantage. The only disadvantage is lack of OEM look.

Yes I also found some aftermarket bellows boots, but was hoping for some proper AMP or Bosch parts, but only found non-bellows boots from the usual electronic parts sources.

In lieu of Bosch and AMP parts I think I'll order some aftermarket rubber boots and post up my result.

Agree non-bellows boots are probably better functionally, but the OCD part of me would like to keep the OEM look as much as possible.

Can't remember where I bought my non-bellows boots, but for sure from one of the usual electronic parts vendors such RS Components, Digikey, or Mouser. The same boots are used on Bosch Junior Power Timer or AMP Superseal connector series.

These are also available from many EFI shops.

Mine were from SRI. I think I have a couple extras around. Do you just need a few I will send them to you. They may only be 2 pin side. I have to got dig through a box.

 

Last time I checked, Ferrari had the correct "bellow" boots but at about 4 times the price as the "non-bellow" boots. IIRC, the OEM boots have BMW molded on them but I have no reference as to what they fit.

Thanks for the link Graeme. That's pretty close to OEM style.

 

I managed to buy some bellows type boot for the MAF 4 conductor plug made by Tyco Electronics. Not exactly the same as OEM but close enough.

Also bought the correct pin extraction tool from TE, which made the job super easy.

By the way the extraction tool goes in from the front of the plug. I also used a pick tool to insert the pins to make sure they are securely locked into place.

I noticed these pins had gold plated contacts.

Errrhh there are two vowels in Wayne the last time I checked.

 

Received my aftermarket 2 and 3 pin silicon boots from a China vendor on Aliexpress. Installed the 3 pin boot on the throttle position sensor today. See photos. Not exactly same as OEM boot and had to cut off the end nib to fit over the wiring sleeve but close enough. Silicon boot has a shinier finish to the OEM or Tyco Electronic 4 pin boot I installed earlier for the MAF sensor, but silicon is heat resistant. I took a lighter to the silicon material to test and it withstood the flame fairly well. Far from perfect but much better aesthetically than before the repair.
