930 Turbo Carrera

Thanks Rich, I'm curious if there are ANY photos of black underneath the flares...I've never seen them on any period or factory photo! I don't believe the factory ever painted the fender wells black....but I'm always happy to be proven wrong.

From what I can tell, texturized and body color...but I don't know what the right texturized product is that gives the correct factory look. The ONS car above is interesting because it seems like it didn't have much paint (to any) paint under the fenders...perhaps because this was a safety car the prepping was different, or was previously a development car.

The big brakes are coming off for correct ones, kills me to do that but it's the right thing to do.

Here are some shots of an early '75 car with just under 45k kms on the clock. I can get some better ones if you need more detail. Australian delivery and pretty dry. You know a previous owner well.

I believe the car has been painted, top-side, sometime in its life. But the underneath looks pretty much as I would expect on an unrestored, early 70's 911 and is consistent around the car.

I once read an opinion, from one of the longer serving Porsche fanatics n the Early911S community, that the continued presence of an original trunk drain is a surviving detail that can point to a lack of interference! FWIW, you can see in the first shot, top right corner, that it's still there.

Looks to me, looking up into it in the 5th shot, like the finish inside the rear wheel arch is different on the tub from the underside of the flares.

Yes, and that is the correct finish..

From 73 onward Porsche painted the wheel wells of all 911s including the turbos.

The paint extended to the rockers and became more of an overspray beyond the pinch weld to the chassis where the natural color of the gravel guard is shown. The entire chassis has never been fully painted on these cars, nor has the trunk or spare tire area of the tub. However, I will admit.. I do prefer the look of the fully painted tub and just completed a full tub cut-in this weekend on an early SC chassis.

The gravel guard color varies from year to year, and we have seen it vary between cars of the same year. It is usually tan or grey in color.

The black over color in the wheel wells seems to vary as well.. some cars have it some cars don't.. it has been argued that this is factory. However, I am of the opinion that it was applied to specific cars (usually US) or dealer applied.

John's picture above is an excellent example of all.. has the black overlaying the color, and its a RoW 930.

Thanks, that is the finish I would expect when you see picture of assembly on how car were finished. It would also seem that most high end restorations don't get these details just right as they tend to to paint everything. Lovely car BTW

I pinged a few more folks today- one of the suggestions was the black stuff is cosmoline that has been impregnated with years of road grime- any comments?

I think you are correct about that. I found cosmoline my 930 when it was being refreshed in 2011 that had never been fully removed at delivery.

 

I'm not sure. During that time period, many cars in the US got aftermarket undercoating/rustproofing. You could hit it with a pressure washer, or do a cryo-cleaning.

I do not have the original sales receipt from '75. But I did have a '72 car, which still had it's original window sticker, paint and finish. I have kept photos of the underside of that car (credit R.Wells) but...it was black, so not very helpful. And it had done over 100k miles as opposed to the 30k on the Turbo. However, you can see exactly the same textures and patterns of dabbing of the paint and some of the blobs of undercoat in vulnerable places on the floors, just as on the '75 car. And you can see from the sticker that "undercoat" was provided free of charge in period.

The Turbo was Australian delivered three years later, so things could have moved on. But still a pre-galvanised car and I suspect nothing much did change.

Are you sure that you need to take off the 917 brakes? I had heard they were an upgrade option? Maybe only a dealer installed option, not sure where I got that impression but I have heard it from more than one source?

 

The matt black in the wheel wells was applied by the factory and it was to give a sense of depth to the wheel wells. It was on U.S. and ROW cars. It was not applied on black or metallic black cars.

I have verified this with Bruce Canepa and John Paterek.

I am unsure if it was done in '75 but all the later cars had it(beside the colors I mentioned above).

 

Perhaps an upgrade at the dealer post 1978?

 

Any insight as to what color the underside of a black livery 75 would have been?

 

To experts.. where do you go for original parts.? I'm looking for a rear 15 in wheel and heat exchangers.

 

If you want a date matched wheel, you can try Pelican or Rennlist. If that is not necessary, you might be able to get a new Fuchs wheel from Porsche.

 

Do you have to torture me posting these shots of this car...the one that got away because at the time I was told by the dealer the wheels were non matching plus I was already in a deal with another early classic, if only I had risked it all and not balked.
At least I still have my partner and kids.

 

Are you sure you can't refurbish the original seats? To me they look as though they could come up very well indeed with some tlc. It is amazing how well leather responds to cleaning and feeding and surely it would be so much nicer to keep the original rather than replace?

 

We all have a couple of those stories, chap...I feel your pain and promise only to post pictures when absolutely necessary. And you are very welcome to go for a spin if you are ever in the UK.

You say you are going to change the tyres - what do you propose to fit? I'm also running Toyo Proxes on my 75 turbo (chassis no 225) and they are good. Mine is a UK car originally supplied with P7's but no longer available and very limited choice for 205 front and 225 rear 15" tyres.
