I'm sure this will be sacrilege to some ludicrous to others and impossible to imagine. But....just saw a spectacular demonstration and the new facility is looking good. You can see the entire track and it's fast. They did Indy...and yes I was there in 2005 so I know about the tires. My god did those non turbo cars sound awesome from sitting up high. Like something evil from forbidden planet, or a jet fighter in close ground support. Hair raising....

They would have to ruin an old classic to make it work.

I was there, too, and it sounded incredible. The V10 cars were absolutely amazing. I'd love for them to race at Daytona...if F1 decides to make the cars sound better.

I was talking to a professional driver and he says they wll never do an F1 race there due to the fact that the track is unsafe if there ever was a high speed crash.
As BMW said the tires are an issue too.
The F1 demontraton was great today.
The whole event was well worth my trip down here.

Apart from the tyre potential issue, the track has not run off areas and is narrow at some places, but then you think that they've raced on a medieval street at Baku and realize that it's only a matter of how much money they would willing to spend to "convince" Bernie.

I was there as well, F- 1 cars sounded great on the oval. they looked even more impressive. However I would not see Modern F-1 there, safety is a pretty clear issue, but more than that the money aspect - paddock is no where near what F-1 demands, and then just hosting fees... don't see that happening either.

but it would be great as its really close!

Must have been awesome - I know some people who were there.

Re: F1 racing there - it's not rated by the FIA, so it can't happen. The FIA has a list of the approved tracks and there are none in the US save COTA and Indy. Of course, as DeSoto points out, the existing tracks are not of equal safety either.

    List:

    https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwj-1K-fwN3QAhUO1WMKHSxoCKcQFggbMAA&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fia.com%2Ffile%2F48098%2Fdownload%3Ftoken%3DJo8fHaGi&usg=AFQjCNFb-7eyGLS3YnQV8rhS-SwIOA6lXQ&sig2=B0aryxmL5ykSyuGcQys_ZQ

Personally, I'd rather see them at Watkins Glen, but that's also not safe enough without changes - especially after the re-pave; the grip is insane. They have it listed as "grade 2", where grade 1 is required for F1.

I have got to drive on the road course at Daytona a few times, it is not a very technical track, but you do get to go very fast. Personally I have always preferred Sebring when racing in Florida. but neither track has the infrastructure to support a grand prix.

Isn't it a shame? The first U.S GP was Sebring, followed by Watkins Glen (I know, I know, Riverside, but it's gone) Rounds of the World Sportscar Championship were held at Daytona, Sebring, and WG. And these renowned circuits are relegated to crapola.... :(

Now we have the cookie cutter Austin (for how long?)....whooopppeeee! :(

Never thought I'd ever see F-1 cars running at Daytona.

Aside from the brilliant sounds, the cars were stuck to the banking like glue (no jostling
around like NASCAR or even some sports cars), it was as though they were on rails
as the aero pushed them onto the track.

    Hugely impressive.

Knew that this would spawn discussion about F-1 running at Daytona but that would
seem to be rather remote as pointed out, the facilities do not match F-1 criteria. And,
even if this was a consideration, why would the France's want to write a check to Bernie
with little to nothing in return?

    Daytona doesn't need F-1 and F-1 doesn't need Daytona.

Edit: Remembering back to late 80's, CART ran a test at DIS. Can't remember the
specifics but a few CART teams showed up and ran a multi-day semi-closed test perhaps
to see if racing there was feasible. Evidently, the answer was no.

I would have to say that Austin isn't cookie cutter, from a track perspective. The style is certainly lacking, and it looked ugly this year; but the track itself is hugely exciting.

Yep. F1 used to be an incredible sensory experience in person thanks to that amazing noise. That's all gone now.

  16. I misspoke, not cookie cutter, I agree. I should have said the new ones lack character.

It's certainly less dangerous to run an F1 car, than a 1 liter Superbike.

F1 ran at OMS back in the day. Now they are just too cautious for a track like Daytona.

Good to see the old cars being kept alive though.

  22. Onatario Motor Speedway and DIS...also apples and oranges. ;)

Both big ovals, with infield road courses. OMS was the more difficult and dangerous of the two, IMO.
