I have a '91 348 with the foam sponge under the shifter gates. I'm placing the later models' rubber boot under the gates, but don't know if the the sponge needs to come out. The sponge sits deeper than the rubber boot. They can potentially coexist. Should I take out the sponge?

As I recall the sponge can stay but you have to be careful that it doesn't foul the pushbutton for the backup light switch, or you'll find your backup lights stay on all the time. Haven't heard that question in years!

Jeff, is there any reason to leave the foam in place if you install a rubber boot?

I left the sponge in place and it hasn't been a problem.

It's been many years, but it seems to me that I found a quarter down inside the shifter box that had a big groove worn into it by the linkage. That's why I looked in there, to see why the lever was binding sometimes. I'm pretty sure I left the foam in place after adjusting it away from the electrical switch.

I also found loose change in mine. It was a penny that didn't interfere with the reverse light, but I could hear it rattling around and drove me bananas (short trip).

What's the part number of this magical piece? I can see straight down into the shift box so I'm missing something in there.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I can't see a purpose for the sponge if you have the rubber. Besides, I hear the sponges are difficult to find: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy7BotZqVy4[/ame]
