At Fiat? At Bertone? The files in my mind have been deleted.
Look at the photo about half way down GT4 assembly beside Boxers (I think) History of Formula 1 - Grand Prix Hall of Fame - Enzo Ferrari - Biography Others via google images 'ferrari 308 production line'
Yes it is! Ive seen another next to a 308 but ive always thought they were built by a coach builder. Maybe it is a Ferrari then!!
Bertone made the first one and then manufacturing transferred to Scaglietti in Maranello which was then fully amalgamated as part of Ferrari proper some time in 1978.
I thought Scaglietti just did the space frame and body panels as they had done on Ferrari's prior but the actual assembly of the car was done at Ferrari.
Well yea Maranello. But who knows the story of how it was actually built. Bertone design Ferrari engine and how actually assembled them? It's really hard to find production line photos on this car. Only stories I've found in 16 yrs of owner ship is about the 73 Paris autoshow blah blah and how it was disliked. Let alone trying to find Avorio Safari paint!!!
Not seeing much of a mystery here. Here is my understanding: Fiat built the "Fiat Dino" in coupe and spyder versions between 1966 and 1973. It shared the same Ferrari-designed (but Fiat manufactured) V6 engine as the Dino 246GT and perhaps some other components. It was first manufactured in a Fiat plant but production shifted to Ferrari in 1969 where it was built alongside the 246GT. The Dino 308GT4 replaced the Dino 246GT. The picture below shows the Dino 246 production line in the Ferrari factory and I would assume the 308GT4 used the same line once 246GT production ceased. Ferrari used Scaglietti, a coach builder located across the road, to build chassis and body panels as it had done for the previous twenty years. It also used Pininfarina and Bertone in the same way. These were typically delivered on wheeled dollies in raw metal. Ferrari has its own foundry where the engine and other castings were made but it relied on a carrozzeria to build its bodies, similar to what Porsche did in the 356 days. I have read in a couple of sources that scaglietti painted the bodies until 1978 when a paint shop was established/enlarged in the main factory and after that unpainted bodies were delivered.
Well things are a mystery when we don't have answers. To me it seems like 308 gt4 info is hard to come by, like it was swept under the rug. So we know Bertone design, Scaglietti body fab? Ferrari assembly of the car and then Scaglietti paint?
Except that paint comes after body fab, not last. They would have delivered painted bodies across the street. That's how Ferrari built cars in the '70's. I'm not sure what they mystery is.
This is from a book I have called Ferrari The Factory. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
So from that we can assume that only the mechanical components were installed by Ferrari? If Bertone were installing the trim then the wiring also had to be in place first? Certainly an interesting topic.
Yes when the term Desegnio Bertone is mentioned its more like Body by Bertone. Cool stuff that never gets mentioned. I just ordered the book on ebay!
So, were all 308 gt4's built in the bertone plant?..then they put engine/transaxle in them behind the gate in Maranello? I thought I read that before cant remember where. Maybe it was only series 1 cars? This is the first I've heard of scagletti being involved, perhaps of this operation changed over time with s1, s2, s3
That could be. But where does scaglietti fit in. Did they actually make the body panels or Bertone? I just got done installing a NOS factory quarter on mine.
