Exactly! I had chance to talk with a lot of youngsters (planning to study design) on design fairs and it is incredible how different their thoughts are about cars and transport in general. I must admit I felt a bit oldfashioned when I heard their negative impressions about gasoline powered cars and exhaust noise

Those moments made me realize why guys like Elon Musk are so popular among very young population. Youngsters project their thoughts through his (new era) products.

 

Solid State, now I understand your point of view. You mean the hybrid tech will inevitably ''evolve'' to all-electric in the future. You're right... What Milano says complement your post: We (the buyers of past/today) are truly gearheads... the future buyers are "gadget, apps, smartphone" people. And the industry will adapt to sell to those people. So... let's wait the Delorean arrives, to come back to the 80's or 90's. [emoji23]

Unfortunately you are right about shifting values. (a natural process btw. I am not so keen on steam engines also)

But how could Ferrari build an 'amazing brand' in the context of this new values?

What is the one thing bystanders always want when you drive past?
Since when is "how much mpg to the gallon do you get" a legitimate question?

Ferrari's are meant to be machine's that appeal to all our senses. I'm sure they will go with the times and stay relevant. Be that with either hybrid, turbo's or cold fusion powered.

'Our generation' is currently purchasing these cars and for now we want great, looks, performance and sound. Those values will change in the future, but Ferrari's,will always envoke an emotional response. If they don't then I'll be sure to check my tampon!

 

My son of 16 is a full petrolhead. I don't buy that ALL kids want electric cars. Electric cars have very good straight line performance, but they're still very heavy, extremely dull looking and I haven't yet seen a Tesla lap time bragged about anywhwre

I have the same opinion.

We cannot forecast what the future will be based only our experiences. We have been raised in different times.

New generations have different wants and values.

Ferrari will have to adapt, it's a question of survival.

It's a difficult balance for Ferrari since going electric assist on their cars may result in the loss of many old guard Ferrari customers. Speaking for myself, I will never buy a hybrid. I will keep my classic combustion only cars.

I am sure this is what people said when Ferrari changed from Carbs to Fuel Injection and when it added V8 cars and when it got rid of Manuals. I am sure it will lose some customers when it goes hybrid but it will also gain some and will probably be net positive. I think after a couple of years of hiatus you will come back into the fold too

I got a chance to buy a pre-owned LaFerrari but I didn't buy it just because it is hybrid.

 

Sure it had nothing to do with the premium?

Wow that is impressive - But you do realize for competitive reasons all future exotics
will move towards hybridization - What will you buy then ?

 

Ferrari represents the pinnacle of automotive performance with a direct link to motorsport. Whatever technology takes them there in the future - the brand values will still be intact. Ferrari is not specifically about manual, naturally aspirated, V8, V12, rear wheel drive or anything grounded in the current or the past. Ferrari is forward looking.

Racing moved from front engined to rear, flat 12 to V6 hybrid. Technology is currently evolving and that what people are buying into.

If people want to buy into the past they can buy a 911

Audi in Formula E is going to create some noise I think....Drag racing legend Don Garlits built an electric dragster as a proof of concept... not there speed wise yet, but it surprised a lot of people...

Once you have been around an old open carb, little exhaust F V12 screaming, you are pretty much ruined as far as the aural soul of a man made machine....That is a problem with any sports e-cars...
.... The trick will be for there still to be excitement somehow. I do think every year we inch closer to Rush's "Red Barchetta",..but we are still a ways off.

 

Any actual updates on the F12M and the specs, it's amazing how little information has come out since the dealers meeting in Daytona?

 

Unfortunately all a bit vague. I got this a few days ago from my dealer "I have seen the new F12 replacement and it is sensational. Muscular (more aggressive than an F12), but very beautiful at the same time…"

well there's always an exception..maybe at msrp...
By the way, that car has had some battery trouble. Not a cheap battery replacement when off warranty.

 

I'm a fan of ferrari front engined V12 cars precisely because they are extreme performance cars but still look like cars , not like a missile or a fighter plane.
