I was told by the dealer a long time ago that cosmoline was added to cars that were shipped by ocean and it was to protect against heavy weather and salt damage in transit (it used to be true that a shipping line would not guarantee under deck storage for shipping so there was the possibility the vehicle would ship as "on deck" cargo). If this is true, vehicles that were not to be shipped by ocean liner would have no need for cosmoline and to have the dealer have to clean it up for customer delivery. Current ocean transit has improved substantially over the past 40 years and so it would seem that cosmoline is no longer necessary for ocean transit.
I am pretty sure the factory used only a Würth underbody sealing. This is the gray rubber-like skin you will find on original cars. Any other finish would signal a completely repainted car if you ask me. Porsche factory applied Cosmoline seems very unlikely to me. (way too old school and too American)
YES, but even so it shouldn't be something that anybody would confuse with factory underbody coating 40 years later.

Can anybody tell me if the engine grilles on the 76 were also anodized in black ? And do you know where I could find nice ones for sale ? Thanks Also, do you know if the windshield and rear glass trims were also anodized?
The engine grille is black and made of a composite material. Window trim was originally black anodized alu. Most has faded to a gray/gunmetal type of color over time. You will see a lot of color variation
