Stunning. Every part of that is a vast improvement on the 488. I just wish they'd done a Berlinetta variant too.

Not terrible overall, but the enormous cavity they've put in the doors to try to pinch in the waist is pretty overdone - that area makes it look like the car has already suffered a side impact.

The rear cabin looks nice with the recliner seats and glass roof. Not sure I'm a fan of the dashboard, but I get that they're trying to scream "electric" at us.

    All the best,
    Andrew.

It's funny, I saw an Astek parked about four car away from the new Prius today.
It looked so much better than it used to...

What do you guys think of the J50?

    It's busy, lot's going on.

In some regards it reminds me of the GTO Evoluzione, the cut up lights and addition of various pieces. Like the GTO Evo, the design of this car might represent a kind of transition between the previous theme and a new set of themes. And sometimes in these transitions, the design themes are not yet resolved.

But I appreciate the reduction of visual mass Ferrari's have going through over the last 15 years. If you compare this design with a 360 spider, it's pretty evident the design is getting leaner, sharper and more svelte, less plump.

And I appreciate that Ferrari design is willing to try different themes while not being afraid to use tried and true elements from over the years.

    Evoluzione indeed.

I need to see the car in the 'tin', but from the photos, it looks good to me.
They are indeed getting a leaner body surfacing compared to some of the previous models you make reference to
I believe they are in good hands to take them into the next gen of cars from a design POV

Never liked that about the 360 front end and variants forward. On this one they may have gone too far the other way. Looks too "sharky" for me. Love the side view and rear though.

The J50 is a good looking car from the side, but the front sort of goes back to the 80's(GM). They are heading in the right direction again, but only a few years ago they did the 458 wich I think is a fine looking car. The 488 took that and over developed it into a not so pretty car. It(488) also sounds like crap without a tuned factory exhaust. Bring your earplugs to the IMSA races this year because both the 488 and Ford GT turbos sound terrible!!

Like it. Clean. Interior has classic "experimental" look. Might have even more fun running around town in the van, though ...

I absolutely love it. Not terribly innovative but other than a few nitpicks, takes many traditional elements and combines them nicely. Much prefer this direction to the 458/488.

Oh my I hate that. Reminds me of one of Toyota's current monstrosities.

These threads are sort of meaningless...

Everyone has different personal preverences... different cars are fabulous, derivative, lame, etc. and the others have entirely different opinions. It's all good.

Even ran across a person (idiot :) ) that liked the Pontiac Aztek.

The point is to talk and be exposed to other points of view, not to arrive at a definitive conclusion. ;)

I would say that if you find them meaningless, ignore them and the thread.

The whole idea of design, creativity, etc. is that it is not a science.
    No right & wrong answers.
Therefore by definition, everyone comes to the table with wildly divergent opinions, and that's just what they are, opinions.
I like being able to hear those opinions regardless whether or not I agree with all of them.
If you're that offended by opinion & conversation, just put the thread on ignore.
    Problem solved. ;)

What gave you that idea???? That was not even implied.

I'm not in the slightest bit offended.

I read, with enjoyment, every one of these "Ugly, beautiful, ugly, etc." threads.
And usually learn a thing or two in the process. So I probably shouldn't have used the work 'meaningless'.

Did you see where I said "It's all good" ?

    :) :) :) :)

Michelin/CCS Competition: Le Mans 2030 - Car Design News

    Michelin/CCS Competition: Le Mans 2030
    20 December 2016 | by CDN Team
    Michelin/CCS Competition: Le Mans 2030
The 28th Annual Michelin Challenge Design Competition for the College for Creative Studies (CCS) has just announced its winners. The college's transportation students were asked to design a Le Mans car for 2030, which produced some fascinating entries and a lot of excellent work – which can be seen in the galleries to the right of this column.

Students were asked to create a GTE class race car to win the Le Mans 24 Hours in the year 2030, and to utilise future-looking technologies, innovations and pioneering problem-solving skills to design a car to either reinforce the premium brand image of a company which is already famous for its historical successes, or ready to elevate its brand through a Le Mans win.

The panel of judges for this year’s event were Clay Dean, design director, global advanced design, General Motors; Craig Metros, design director, North American Exterior, Ford Motor Company; and Nicho Vardis, design manager, SRT, Mopar and Motorsports, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.

The winners were announced at an event at the A. Alfred Taubman Center for Design Education in Detroit, Mich. The winning CCS transportation students received scholarships as part of a $35,000 donation from Michelin to support the school’s Transportation Design program.

L-R: Rick Rogers, president of CCS; Thom Roach, vice president of original-equipment marketing, Michelin North and South America; Kavish Latif; Joe Halaszynski; Dong Hun Joung; Ben Ebel, innovation deployment director of original equipment for Michelin North America and co-chair of Michelin Challenge Design
    And the winners were...

First: Joe Halaszynski of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, with a Dyson-branded entry
Second: Dong Hun Joung of Busan, South Korea, with an Audi
Third: Kavish Latif of Agra, India, with an Aston Martin

Honourable Mentions: Alejandro Lozano-Robledo of Bogota, Colombia, with a Pagani and Lucas Sein of Atlanta, with a Tesla.

“An entry that was inspired by the Dyson brand was totally unexpected and executed beautifully. The thought of taking a vacuum cleaner and turning it into a car was out-of-the-box and I appreciate the level of detail that went into it,” Vardis said.

“As a CCS Alumni, I was honored to be invited back to my alma mater as a judge for this competition. I was so impressed with each student’s design journey, from early sketches to a finished scale model. As a designer, reviewing that journey and to see how they resolve issues with a final scale model is a great opportunity to see their concepts and solutions come to life,” Metros said.

“Le Mans 2030 has been a very powerful and popular theme. The entries from the global competition and the CCS competition both provided insightful and innovative designs to showcase race cars of the future,” said Thom Roach, vice president of original-equipment marketing, Michelin North and South America.

“The GTE entries are derived from production-based vehicles, so it was quite interesting to see how the CCS students successfully carried iconic design elements from current vehicles forward to 2030, while integrating innovative future technologies for both production and race vehicles.”

The 2018 Michelin Challenge Design theme “Mobility, Utility, Flexibility: Designing for the Next Global Revolution”, invites participants to create the next revolutionary pickup truck, or open-bedded vehicle. Entrants can now register at Michelin Challenge Design | Advancing Mobility Through Design?.
