My windshield fogged up a bit tonight so I tried the defroster option on the HVAC and nothing came out of the dash vents. I tried all of the modes, hot and cold, and no air would come out.

I also searched a bit on here but haven't read anything relatable. Any ideas?

    EDIT: Sorry, 1995 F355.

What model? When I first bought my 348 I had a gremlin in the HVAC and clock . Dan at Recambi was helpful in suggesting I unplug the electrical harness, clean the contacts and plug it back in. It worked! DAVID

Thanks for the tip, David! I can hear the air flow transfer towards the dash when the defroster is selected, it just doesn't come out.

Well I got my defroster working today. Turns out, there were some obstructions tightly packed underneath the dash vents on both driver and passenger sides that pretty much cut off all air travel. Those obstructions, were socks. And not just one or a pair, but five pairs (ten socks), jammed in along with some tape and nasty adhesive.

I still can't believe it...this car continues to surprise me.

Thank you for the help, Bruce and for the hemostats, definitely came in handy!

Is that white powder in the socks?

Any horse's heads in the luggage compartment?

The white latex gloves have me thinking ;)
That and how did you get your head/eyes that far under the dash of a 355 ????
I got my head under there once, could not see squat and ended up at the chiropractor.

This has proper tickled me, at least if someone has the same problem in the future they'll know exactly what to look for if they uncover this thread!

Wow! That is so crazy! But definitely one of the more interesting things to find in a dash vent!

    Gross.

Depending on the material the socks were made from, they could have been a wonderful breeding ground for lord-knows-what.

That's nuts. I cant imagine under what circumstances someone would put socks in a defroster vent.

Maybe when something was being replaced so as not to have objects fall down them? But socks? No shop rags?

    Really odd.

Or just some tape across the vent screens...not good enough for someone, however. I proceeded to disinfect the whole interior completely, burned those gloves and took a thorough shower afterwards.

At least they were not used BVD's! Though better support I would think at one time maybe water or condensation got in there and op did this, or worse.. mice? Weird.

Sorry but I just had to post this..

Clearly someone (previous owner maybe) smuggling contraband socks.

Have you tested the defroster controls to ensure that those vents will indeed shut off? Perhaps the defroster was stuck on 100% of the time so someone plugged the duct with a (hopefully clean) sock.

Yes, the defroster will turn on and off, with the controls. However, the recirculation flap in front of the dash (in the trunk) is malfunctioning so I'm thinking maybe the PO stuffed socks in there to prevent warmer air from constantly coming into the cabin via the dash vents and fogging up the windshield - instead of properly fixing the recirc flap...just a theory :)
