Ferrari 330 P4 #0856 on eBay??? Please read...

Hello everybody,
While I do like the look of some Ferraris, I am not that much of an enthusiast, especially because I am not a millionare!
I am an ebay seller, and I often sell things for people and get a commission. Well today, I was asked to list a Ferrari 330 P4. After listing it, I did some research and questioned the seller about the chassis number. He said it is number 0856. By what I have read, that car is the only surviving original P4, and that it has been owned by Lawrence Still since 2000, and he seems really attached to it. Could it be that he is selling it? It seems that this seller is pulling my leg. You can find the listing on eBay; he says the car is located in Nice, France.
I would like to get in contact with Mr Stroll too; is there any way I can do that? Obviously I can't just google him to find a phone number.

Well this sounds like it could get interesting!

 

Stupid question, but why does the seller need you to list the item on his behalf?

 

From some quick web searches:

RM-Southeby's had 0858 for auction in 2010, but it failed to sell when the bids fell just short of $10M.

This doesn't strike me as the kind of car you'd sell on e-bay.

Have you actually seen the car?

From some research, it seems that 0856 appeared at the Finali Mondiali Concours in Daytona on Dec 3rd.

It's possible that someone is using photos from that event but doesn't actually have the car.

According to Wiki, Lawrence Stroll has a lot of business interests in Canada, but lives in Geneva. (Info may be outdated.)

But I doubt he'd put 0856 on ebay to try to recoup some of that.

 

Sounds as if you have many questions to ask this person that hired you to sell the P4. Did they contact you through email only? Will they give you a legit address and phone number?

Think about it: Why would the "seller" ask for your help in listing the car on eBay, WHEN IT WAS ALREADY ON eBay? Otherwise, there would not have been a link to the car's listing.

I think the OP is the person that created the original Ebay listing.

I did create that listing. I am assuming that the seller didn't want to bother setting up an ebay account; it does take time and work to get your feedback up and get past the limits ebay puts on new sellers. I have done selling for others before; just not a car.

Where on the car would it show the chassis number? I want to get the seller to send me a picture of it.
This whole business seems very fishy. I don't think a car like this would be sold through a third party on ebay. Is there a chance the car has been stolen? If not, why else would this guy want me to list this car?

The OP's IP addresses match the location of the eBay seller. I can't get into specifics but I can say with reasonable certainty that I have located exactly who the OP is.

I think the OP is getting scammed by the seller.

The only thing that's really hard to figure out here is if CJ1024 is the scammer or just tremendously naive.

IMO, The P4 is one of the best looking prototype race cars ever.

 

Photos on E-bay, the engine looks like a Ferrari 400.

 

The op seems rather young. I personally am willing to cut him a bit of slack. He may indeed have been the victim or potential victim of a scam. And he is right to ask questions in a forum such as this.

I am 18 years old, still in high school, and don't know much about Ferraris. However once I dug into the P4 history red flags were popping up. I searched around and this forum seemed the best place to go. Please forgive me if I shouldn't have posted here.

Anyway, I questioned the supposed seller and gave him the facts on the original 0856 P4 and the replica, and he sent me this reply: "I am so sorry I didn't do enough due diligence on the car because it was sent to me by a repeat customer of mine.
Yes alot of things don't add up so take it down.

Hope you understand."
I have taken the listing down, and I will avoid this guy; I don't want to get pulled down into any trouble with $10 million cars!

So after all that, What did I get? I will be more carefull with scammers, but I also learned about a car I've never heard about before! The P4 is one of the nicest cars I've ever seen; they really did a good job on the design.

 

How did the (alleged) owner/seller/broker pick you in the first place? Had you done business with them before? Do you own/run an Ebay listing business where people just contact you and you sell stuff for them on Ebay?
