I don't know what it is about detailing pics but they just make me smile, especially when it's a car as special as this. Must be my OCD kicking in. :)
    Great stuff!

It appeals to the hidden OCD in all of us.

Spent an interesting hour or so at Topaz's facility seeing what goes into a custom wrap.

For an F12, 675, 458 or whatever, once the model has been scanned, they can just print out the exact sized panels, indeed just look at the pic of the rolls waiting , tdf, LF, FF, 570GT etc.

The F40 has always been an issue as, due to their manufacturing methods, no two cars are exactly alike and we are dealing here down to 1mm or less. So even for a regular F40, to get it perfect, it requires a custom design.

I hope to be able to show in a bit more detail as the process gets underway, but in the LM's case, it starts with a hand laid mark up which is then digitised into a pattern on the computer with thousands of reference points. From that a trial set of panels is produced, laid up and adjusted to a finer tolerance, the changes digitised again (you can see the adjustments overlaid blue on red on the rear clam in the 3rd image) and minute curves and details added and then printed again before finally being applied. In exceptional circumstances it might even take three panels, so at a minimum the car is effectively wrapped twice.

    Anyway, more to follow

Thanks for your comments and I'm glad they finally made it and that they live up to expectations after what turned out to be one of the most trying elements of the entire project!

My favorite part of this thread is the level of detail demanded by Tim and delivered by the experts hired. The world would be a much better place if this is how all businesses (big or small) worked. I salute your perseverance Tim!

    INCREDIBLE TIM!

I am very happy for you and wow, this is just the kind of treatment and effort this car deserves and I am not at all surprised you have done this. Well done!

    hi Tim ,

first of all thank you for sharing such a nice and detailed restoration work.
I think you are the only person who can answer with certainty to my question: is it correct the following 'F40' composite body parts scheme ?'
    1st layer-carbon-kevlar >> 2nd - fiberglass + Nomex honeycomb + fiberglass >> 3 ° carbon-Kevlar
The thickness of the central honeycomb layer , depends on the type of body piece or not ? ( so the thickness is all over the same ? )
thanks and again a lot of compliments for the restoration.

    Flavio (Tuscany Italy)

( sorry for my poor english )

I have spoken with Kevin at Mototechnique who has had many F40's to repair and whilst there would appear to be little consistency, the average construction is as follows ........... After an application of Gelcoat, the 1st layer laid in the mould ( which will be the painted outer surface ) will be a fine woven twill fibre glass followed by two thicker woven twill layers of fibre / glass. Then the Honey comb is inserted and buried by a medium weight woven fibre glass twill material, finally a layer of Carbon / Kevlar is added for ( we think show purposes ) We think that the materials used are " pre-impregnated with resin and activator as the inner layers only adhere to the surface faces of the Honeycomb ( there is no inclusion of resin within the honeycomb which would not be the case if the parts were hand laid up or made by resin infusion.

    I hope this helps.

If you want to see the cross section of the typical original construction have a look at

    http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/288gto-f40-f50-enzo-laferrari-sponsored-bradan/181907-f-40-bodywork-how-much-fibre-glass-3.html

where I posted a photo of a broken piece. There's a lot of resin in there, probably shaken out by the impact! The carbon-kevlar layer may well be there to prevent the panel snapping on impact, but as Tim say, is not structural. One of the three original manufacturers is still in business near Milan and produces panels to the original specification, and will know for sure. PM me if you want details.

awesome Tim............ thank you for the detailed answer ...it helps a lot !!
Ferrari used to talk about carbon-kevlar as structural system in the F40 but really it did not convince me. It was for advertising purposes as you said.

    thanks a lot
