It is like walking into the room when my wife has Entertainment Tonight on, I actually feel I lose intelligence watching that crap, same with Jalopnik and You Tube comments. Spend too much time reading those comments and you could be putting yourself back to the intellect of a 5 year old.

Indeed! I love the free exchange of info made possible by the Internet but the downside is the opportunity to post disinformation just as easily. It's one thing if it's done out of ignorance but it's something else entirely if it's done strictly for personal gain. Hopefully this sort of thing only gains traction with their target demographic, which is rather different that actual Ferrari buyers.

looks like theres 2 threads going on this now..

the JR Garage vid was all in good fun..

but the Jalopnik article was total bs.. !
his car/review vids are horrible.. and his stretch with the 360 was horrendous..

ive driven my 355 for 2 years now, close to 10,000 miles trouble free.
there were maintenance items ( major was due, headers etc) I knew it needed when I bought the car.. so there was never a surprise etc..
considerations that were all factored in before buying..

just watched the video. Definitely click bait.

Why? The lion share of the supposed 37K was done by the 'previous' owner which sounded like a person that was 'rejuvenating' a neglected car.

He should have replaced the valve guides on the first major - he didn't hence the 2 majors which was 22K of the 37K, 5K were tires, new rotors, new calipers, oil change etc - that's consumables (not problems with the car) we're now at 27K

    Now these kids bought car.

    They spent 8K on a busted transmission and 2K on stickies.= ~38K

My bet is the car will be relatively trouble free for at least 3-5 years if it was not abused. Calculate cost of ownership on a used Ferrari (After it has been sorted and driven) not before!

I got to tip my hat at these kids though - smart way to cash in on 'non-troversy' to make money on YouTube.

easy my friend! Mitch knows the subject quite well, I've driven a few times with either his 328, 348, 355.

No doubt the the article is sensationalized, the video was 'true' albeit fully without context for getting the attention we are all giving it now. What I saying is I agree with both of you. Ferrari (can be crazy) expensive, AND no doubt this video is click bait.

I was thinking about how FChat would react to this. Kinda met my expectations.. :)

The comments are the best IMHO. The ones with the chip on their shoulder hating on "rich" owners and how they'd never buy a Ferrari because they can buy like a Evo and Seventeen X-Boxes for that repair amount won't ever own one.

Anyone who spends more than 15 minutes on this site recognizes it the Prior owner as a being taken by his shop for a ride. Compression should have been done with Major and then guides. I personally laughed at the video when they bought it and the clutch blew same day. I'm surprised their PPI didn't pick it up. Unless they deferred for click bait.

If not a confabulation then I don't believe for one minute that they got their money any other way than by trust fund. This Youtube thing is a side "business idea". I especially liked the video of him letting a 13 year old drive it. Must have been on a track because that isn't legal on public roads right?

This is an old article that was previously discussed here. It's from 2015.

The stigma around these cars is incorrect and usually perpetuated by inexperienced "enthusiasts" who just want a "cheap" Ferrari.

Hey, experienced enthusists want cheap ferraris too!!!! right until the point they purchase, then the car they bought should double in value.

More importantly, I wonder how much money this thread has generated these schmucks.

This is exactly the kind of second hand horror story I mentioned in the other thread. You guys are giving it credibility by commenting. This story has been circulating around the internet since the day the 355 roll out. By posting, you are generating internet search hits. A single story from an envious person becomes hundreds, thousands, millions giving the impression the 355 is a terrible car. Does it occur to anyone this author is obsessed with the 355 popularity. What he claims to have is a model least popular among the Ferrari lineup. (No offense to the other owners).

Some of "us" wonder about the future value of the 355. Anticipate it will go up but does nothing to promote its prestige. Instead, participate, engage in a feeding frenzy like piranhas feasting on second, third hand horror story authored by someone who clearly has a chip on his shoulder. This kind of story should be banded by all 344/355 owners. If one wants to discuss an inquiring issue, address it as such but don't regurgitates internet story/links. Stop feeding the troll.

Roth, I can see where you're coming from, at least to an extent, but I have to disagree. I don't think we're "feeding the trolls", other than perhaps the few hits we've given the video, and in my case that will be cancelled out by the fact that I intend to avoid those kid's videos altogether in the future and I doubt I'll spend time on Jalopnik anymore either.

I also don't think that we should allow the claims to go unanswered on this forum. If outsiders come here and read this thread that's a good thing because it offers a counterpoint to the click bait which is based on actual ownership experiences. We don't have anything to hide here-- it's common knowledge that the cars are costly to keep, but we here know that the claims made in the video were mostly hyped to drive traffic. I don't think there's anything wrong with making another perspective available to those who are willing to see past the YouTube malarkey.

Ownership costs are perhaps the biggest concern of a prospective Ferrari owner. Better to address that fairly and accurately than to have someone chased off because they believe these kids, or to have a new owner get all disillusioned because he thought a 355 could be maintained at the same cost of a Mercedes.

I do think owners can be their own worst enemies when they constantly poo-poo the asking prices of cars for sale, but that's a topic for another day. :)

You do realize that you are arguing over an article that is a couple of years old and has been posted here and discussed previously, don't you. how silly. Maybe the comments would be better directed to Japonik.

The article regarding the young lads and their expenses was posted yesterday. Jalopnik felt the need reference Doug's 'understated' article from a couple of years back to support it.

How old are belt threads, a topic that has been posted repeatedly, argued over repeatedly, and discussed repeatedly?

Factories make recommendations based on average driving. Conditions and usage dictates if you should accelerate or extend from this recommendation. I have an 80s Mercedes SL with steel timing chains that need replacement after 100k miles. But as most don't reach this level it becomes an age criteria and careful listening of engine noises especially upon startup. I tried searching for similar criteria for our 355 engine- any noise or other indicator to signal it's time to change the timing belt. Anyone know??

    I hear a belt change costs $30,000 on a 355 so I'd vote for five years. ;)
