'Official' F12M Rumours and Launch

I think Daytona would be a great name. I wonder if they would put a number in front...

We had wished/hoped they would have put the Daytona label on the F12 TDF. While we love the car and it is truly amazing, "tdf" (legally, they can't brand it Tour de France) is a bit of a misfit name.

At least the 365GTB/4 picked up it's nickname by virtue of having competed at Daytona....

IIRC Chrysler has had a few forgettable models, as had GM, with Daytona, Sebring, et al in the names.

more comments - the "Daytona" name was supposedly leaked before the 365 GTB/4 was introduced in 1968 so Ferrari being Ferrari the decision was made to simply drop the name from the official introduction.
Also Daytona is actually Daitona since there is no "Y" in Italian...

Ferrari calls their convertibles "Spider" not "Spyder". "Spyder" is s Porsche thing.

Daytona Spyder was SpYder and then with the later models they became SpIder. Don't understand why but having owned a Daytona Spyder it was with a Y!

 

Interesting so how many models did Ferrari produce that it that they called spYder ?

 

Spider started with the 308, so now you can start counting.

Personally I hate the spelling with a "Y". Spyder sounds like something from an 80's glam band - like back when "Wild" was spelled "Wyld" to make it sound kool and the girls playing in Motley Crüe where the big thing.

I also thought prior models were SpYder and then the SpIder was a newer use by Ferrari. I have seen the older cars referred to as SpYder in all sorts of material, but it might not have been official Ferrari material.

I just looked on Ferrari's website and while I can find many examples of SpIder, I can't find a single example of SpYder...

This bears further inquiry....

 

The Daytona name comes from the 1-2-3 finish of the P cars at the 67 Daytona 24 hours not from the 365GTB/4 competing there. In later years after it was out of production the 365GTB/4 was actually quite a successful car at that circuit especially in 79.

Dodge currently offer a Charger Daytona and Triumph motorcycles also have a Daytona model so I personally doubt Ferrari will call this car Daytona.

 

Yes, but Pontiac also has GTO and that didn't stop them.

50th anniversary of that 1-2-3 must make it a strong possibility

There are threads on this.SpIder seems to have come in with 348.Prior to that SpYder but I'm sure someone will find an exception !

 

True but GTO was an official Ferrari designation Daytona never was.

 

Is there any real clarity on how (if)this viewing is being arranged with re to dates/groups/regions/dealers....

 

Here's proof that parts of 365 GTB/4's were factory stamped DAITONA (not Daytona). Flywheel for chassis 12699.

Marcel was kind enough to contact me and help me understand that as there is no "y" in the Italian language, all the cars are "spIder". But as this is Ferrari, and some times things happen, you could have, say, the USA brochure for a model like the "250 granturismo spyder california"- and even if parts are written in Italian, since its for the American market, they could use a "y"....

It seems you could have it either way, but my take, just learning about this right now, is to stick with the Italian and thus they should all be "spider", however, with the understanding that they were sometimes spelled with the Y for other markets.

To get back to the topic, does that mean this car could be called the DAITONA then? I would argue since it would be for a proper noun, then they should stick to the American spelling of Daytona.

Confused yet? Can't we get back to whether or not the rear steer will be in phase (TDF like) or both in and counter phase (GTC4 like).

 

For me UK client South England dealer, schedule is lunch, briefing re 70th anniversary, technical, drinks and unveil, shortened Atelier session for clients with early builds. About 4 hours.

I have a 70th GTB coming in Q2 but the 70th I mention above is standard, I believe it is to set the scene and provenance for the unveil. Nothing personal to me.

 

I do realise that this would make your day dear Tim, but I somehow doubt that it will happen. The Daytona moniker was never official and that car cut its teeth on said track, which doesn't appear to be the case for the new car. Apologies for ruining it for you mate.

 

You are right, it just fits nicely now they have attached Lusso to the GTC4, so why not Daytona to the F12? Why rush to launch the unfinished car to the dealers at Daytona-it just seems all to be pointing towards it.

But it's Ferrari, which means it won't!

Seriously, I think it's 50/50. On one hand, fans have been announcing the comeback of the Daytona moniker again and again since the 550. So far, never happened, and there's no better reason why it should happen now. On the other hand, tdf and Lusso came back recently, as well as few others before. Honestly, after "LaFerrari", I expect truly anything.
