With the talk of water pump life expectancy and when or if they should be replaced during majors I got to thinking about how much it actually cost to maintain a 3x8. So I added up all my receipts over my 32 years of ownership. Before posting my number I want to point out that until about 1994 all work on my car was done at a dealer. After that, I started doing the fluids changes and also did a brake job with caliper rebuild, made up new plug wires and replaced 1 distributor cap. I don't have all my receipts for those DIY items. I am not considering any cosmetic work. My total for 32 years, 32k miles comes out to $14,003.20. If I estimate the cost of the DIY work for which I don't have receipts at $1000 I'll call it $15,000 even. So roughly $15,000 from 1985 to present.

I would be interested in others posting their costs for maintenance. I realize that most here haven't owned their cars since new so, if you will, state the periods of ownership. Also if you have records from previous owners, include those in the cost figure as well and state the total period covered.

As cars change hands, the new owners have to deal with deferred maintenance. You did not. So I'd expect others to be higher. and 32K miles for 32 years is very low. When I was new to this site, the consensus was $3-4K/yr. I haven't done the math, but I expect mine is about that.

This is for MAINTENANCE only? Correct? REPAIRS would be a whole other story.

Use judgment. Scheduled maintenance and if it was necessary to make the car road worthy, include it. Is a blown head gasket maintenance or repair? Either way, I'd include it. My number includes everything but some cosmetic paint work.

Just trying to get a gut feeling of what people spend on these cars to keep them on the road.

I have probably spent around $15,000-$20,000 in renovation and maintenance in 6 years. That includes a hefty independent service on purchase and a new interior. The maintenance part would be around $10,000 of that. Regardless, since restoring and maintaining the car is part of my R&R from my real job... It's money well spent.

I have never worked out the total documented expenditure on my car but I have one single bill from a previous owner that is over $16,000. Maybe I should leave a copy on display when I park the car to deter would be thieves :)

    NONSENSE QUESTION.

Mantaining cost goes from 0 to 100000 euro per year.

it depends how and how much you drive it and which is the calr level you want to mantain. If you want to have the car always like new and you do 10 k miles per year, 10 k a year couldn't be enough. Average working car can be 1-2 k a year.

    ciao

I would say that there is most likely a wide range to this figure depending completely on the owner rather than the car itself. As the third owner I'm a complete DIY'er so the car is never again going to see the inside of a dealership or specialty shop and frankly I am aghast when looking over the receipts of maintenance costs incurred by the original owners where labor was often three times the already inflated parts prices. So if I were to add up all of the receipts in my records I would be giving you a number which, in my opinion, is more representative of how some people (especially new owners) were getting reamed rather than a true figure of what it costs to maintain a 308. Overall though I don't imagine that the records of new Porsche 911 owners of the same era would be that much different.

To be fair though, there are difficulties and challenges to working on these cars and a lot of it is labor intensive. To do any topside engine work for instance requires special prep just to ensure you don't mess up the paint and bodywork. So if I were to count my own time at a standard shop rate the numbers might not be so far off but then I might spend hours messing with a few clamps and hoses just to have it exactly the way I want it. There are also differences in miles driven per year.

What I'm saying is that it would be difficult to pin down a cost per year or cost per mile figure. At least not one that would be truly relevant to all owners in general.

I didn't ask over a year. I asked over the life of the car, or for as long as you have records. My case is about $15k dollars over 32 years. If you haven't owned the car very long and don't have records from previous owners you really can't contribute to the thread as it applies to car with longer term ownership history.

Absolutely correct. The person posing the question and as usual trying to create controversy is the original owner of his and is using his car as an example. The market place places a premium on one owner cars for very good reason. The same reason applies to anyone here who has a 2 or more owner car having higher ownership costs. I say this needs to be limited to one owner cars for the outcome to have any validity at all.

    Don't get these.

This is a valid post. Serious owner with valid points and rationale. I see no controversy here.

Why are people so touchy feely when it comes to maintenance cost or repair of these cars? It is what it is. They cost what they cost. $15k or $150k. One owner or 20 owners (realistically no more 1/2 owners cars of these out there, so it should just be representative of the normal population and clarify the impacts on cost of well maintained cars - vs other not so well maintained..

I find it super valuable and helpful overall.

If you want to answer, do - otherwise no value coming here and saying people seek controversy really..

It looks that the maintenance cost for a Ferrari is less than a Fiat Panda. Has anyone here ever entered in an official assistance point?

    I don't believe

The cost will vary by who did the maintenance. With dealer service being the most expensive. Repair shops can also markup part prices significantly. If you can DIY the maintenance, a few hundred dollars/yr.

Any question like this is either the easiest in the world to answer...or completely unpredictable. Just because it's a Ferrari 308 has very little to do with it. The only maintenance I'm familiar with in most automobiles is oil change, brake pads, tires, the inevitable and always argued belt change and alignment of valves, air filter, fuel filters, etc. In other words, wear items. They all have set costs at repair facilities or can be done by the owner. Add them up, frequency based on time or mileage, and do the math. Unpredictable? Everything else!

My interest is in how much people have been will to invest in keeping these cars on the road. Makes no difference who does the work, who owned it, how many owners there have been. Just trying to see what people have invested. There could be someone who bought a project car, owned it for a year or two and put and put $20k into it. It would be nice to include anything know about the history of the car as well. If you don't care to participate, don't. If all you care to contribute is casting dispersion on motive, feel free to do so.

Also, if you care to question my figure recognize that back in the late 80's and 90's a 15k service at a dealer was about $2500.

32 years, about $4,000. All DIY except tires.

I can even list the parts that failed, other than regular maintenance items.

    (1) Coil - Magnetti Marelli
    (1) Fuel Pump - Bosch
    (2) Timing Belt Idler Bearings - SK ?
    (1) Coolant Cross Member Union - ?
    (1) Accumulator - Bosch
    (1) Water Pump - Ferrari ?

Most important maintenance - Run the car, don't let her sit.

As a reference point, an inflation calculator figures that $2,500 in 1990 is equivalent to about $4,600 today.

I don't think anything can be achieved by arbitrary figures of any individual's maintenance cost. There will be no set answer. Also, the question of how many will pay to keep them on the road? Uh, anybody have a crystal ball?

The short answer is that it is one of the lowest maintenance costs of any Ferrari when serviced annually.

I've owned my car 15 years. Probably better if I don't post my costs, it's significantly higher than others have experienced. 25k miles. I figure $5k every 5 years just for the major. I don't DIY.

I guess this is a good time to express my pet peave...People ask me how long do you think a car will last? The answer I give them is...Have you ever seen a Model T? A car will last as long as you keep fixing it! :)
