Very cool. Will add some excitement to watching F3 this year also.

Mick is a real talent and future prospect. But living in a goldfish bowl with massive spotlight and public expectations must be the biggest challenge of all.
The media should ease off while he's still learning his craft until he arrives in F1, but sadly that won't happen.

Just curious why, at 17 (like Max V.), Mick isn't already in F1?

Not trying to be flippant, but yes, I thought about the tremendous pressure; dealing with his father's injury and the effect on the family, as well as Ferrari now looking to recapture the glory days in the form of a messiah... Maybe they're just bringing him along slowly?

Just goes to show us further that Ferrari had no love lost for Schumacher.

Max did F3 by this time. Mick has only done two seasons of F4. You can't tell too much from F4 honestly. It will tell you who is ready for F3 or FR2.0, but not really who will be successful beyond that. Even F3 is quite a ways from F1 these days. Max's jump was quite remarkable.

In addition, he does not have the required super points with his placings thus far in F4. Recall that these requirements came after Max's promotion to F1, and really - in response to it.

Thanks, that clarifies things a bit. So the bar was raised after Max, to make sure younger immature drivers go through at least a semblance of a measured vetting process, proving their quickness but also that they're not a danger to themselves or anyone else. Still, it would be nice to see Mick in F1 sooner rather than later. How far can the apple roll from the tree?

I believe the superpoint system is the same, it's the minimum age for F1 that's changed after Max.

    Maybe he does, who knows....

Let's just hope Ferrari doesn't put too much pressure on the kid. He's been driving under a different name for a reason.

Wherever he ends up, I hope for his sake it's on merit and not on name alone. It would be sad to see a young mans career torn up by greedy marketing men keen to get quicker exposure than merited.

He is clearly far too young to be talked about in this way. Let him learn his trade in peace!

The Ferrari Driver Academy is *supposedly* for inexperienced drivers that show promise. At least two of the current drivers (Fitipaldi jr & Armstrong) have less experience than Mick.

I look forward to a day when Mick crosses the line in Rosso corsa, and his father is able to be standing on the line to watch it....

I know I am getting way ahead of myself but could you imagine if he did become a world champion?. I too hope somehow his dad has some clue of his sons achievements. Such a sad story for Nick to be heading into a race career with his father's condition. Michael would have been a great coach to have in his sons corner. I wish them both the best of luck.

That to me would be the issue. But he's German so... emotion isn't one of their issues. (Yah I know I'm going to be nailed on this one!)

His dad was the best of the best. I hope he's not suffering.

Ferrari opens door for Mick Schumacher

Ferrari has swung open the door for Mick Schumacher.

Mick is the 17-year-old son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher, who won five titles for Ferrari between 2000 and 2004.

This year, he will enter European F3 for the Ferrari-linked Prema team, but it has seemed more likely Schumacher would actually enter the Mercedes family.

But Ferrari's driver 'academy' chief Massimo Rivola said: "About his (Mick's) future, I don't know what he will decide to do.

"But if he would like to enter the Ferrari programme, he will find a red carpet," he told Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport.

I think it’s a nice touch, he’s recognising his dads memory as the most successful driver ever, and the last one that could ever be thought of as such by number of driver titles since the driver nowadays means Next to nothing without the dominant car.
