Ah thanks for confirming. The article stated Ferrari wanted the very early chassis back and made them an offer they could not refuse, including a replacement F40, another myth debunked :)

I remember at the time Mason wrote a story about the pick up and the drive back the following day in the Sunday Times
iirc there was some freak October weather and it stated snowing at one point

I read the story when I was at school and after that I always wanted to get an F40 - shame it took me another 25 years

Photo from Fiorano is taken in July '88 after Pink Floyd's Modena concert during the
"Momentary Lapse of Reason" tour. They went to Maranello for a test and was joined by MD Roger Maingot from Maranello Concessionaries and Ron Stratton of Stratton Ferrari. (Seen shaking hands with Nick Mason and David Gilmour respectively). The cars were "factory demonstrators" and had no relation to the ones delivered 3 months later. Neither Mason's or Gilmour's F40 had sliding windows. However both cars were later fitted with the custom made "Mason spec." rear window with 3 rows of vents. Both Mason and Gilmour collected their cars personally from Maranello and drove them back. (On Italian export plates). Mason had Bob Houghton with him as a co-driver, an "incident" in France involving the Gendarmerie(!) inspired Mason to have the modified Perspex covers made. More to be read about it all in Mason's book, "Into The Red"

    Great info Collesano.

The article I recall was an interview with Gilmour and he said they only owned their original early spec F40s a few months when the factory convinced them to have another later pair.

Could it be that they agreed to purchase the two demonstrators they tried out that day, but ended up with a different pair of cars a few months later, and it was that which Gilmour was recounting?

Maybe a combination of the memory from that test in July and taking delivery of the cars in October perhaps?

Not having read that mentioned interview I cannot offer any other explanation. But I've never heard of any earlier cars for Mason or Gilmour. But Maranello Concessionaries had a very early car with sliding windows, maybe they had that on loan occasionally? (Wonder where that car ended up?)

Again referring to "Into The Red" ; Mason describes the agonisingly long wait for his F40, he jokingly says he considered changing his name to "Aaron Aardvark" before ordering in case the alphabetical order had any influence on the delivery date... He does refer to the test at Fiorano too, but there is no mention about any prototype/early car on loan from the factory. Good to know that 78122 is still in his hands and well cared for. 78036 however seems to have disappeared?

Try as I might I cannot find it, so working on memory alone. Gilmour was very specific though about them both swapping out F40s.

Was the Maranello Concessionaries car registered in the UK under E274 BGT ? as that is chassis number ZFFGJ34B000077289 which is still in the UK with a current MOT and Tax

Just found Gilmours reg no its F40 REH its not showing as UK registered under that plate anymore though so either had a plate change or gone abroad.

October was too late :). I will never forget the first test car in Fiorano in may 88.
A very few cars was built by the factory +/- 10, the idea was to stock them and makes important delivery lot. At the same time, Porsche who was presented his 959 in 1984 start the first customer delivery some weeks before :).

Great picture, very to see it.

E274 BGT / 77289 was first registered in the UK in July 1988 so a very early example indeed

You are probably right about the Maranello Concessionaries car, couldn't find the photo I have somewhere.... Still intrigued about those two earlier cars, only Gilmour and Mason can shed any light on that mystery I guess?

Gilmour's car was first registered F58 SBF (Stoke-on-Trent?) but was soon given a more suitable number as per Mason's car. Photo shows the car with its owner at Silverstone during a "Club '89" trackday, complete with new reg and "Mason spec." rear screen. (Photo copyright "Gerald Mouse" notaussiefloyd.com)

Photo from Fiorano is probably taken on Monday July 11th. Could the car with sliding windows which Mason and Maingot is standing next to be the coming E274 BGT?

Could well be. E274 features quite a bit in the Mark Hughes book "Supercars Ferrari F40"

Going from memory again Gilmour said in the article Masons had sliding windows and his had wind down ones, and that the cars were very early examples that Ferrari later wanted back, maybe they agreed a deal to buy that pair in the pic in early July, then elected to wait and have the later cars in a sweeter deal from Ferrari.

Guessing those are period shots of an early LM being built, if so that must be Michelottos shop.
