How can this be handled? There is a car I am interested in at a dealer. They are fine with having it sent for a ppi and I am fine with paying for it but they told me that someone else just had a ppi done, probably at the same place I would send it, but their financing fell through.
Do I just ignore it and send the car back for another ppi or do I call the dealer who did the ppi and ask/tell them I will pay them something like 50% of their inspection rate for a copy of the report? I know someone else footed the bill for that report but why take the risk of transporting the car again and wasting time if there is a report already available? Not a money issue for me but rather a time thing.

What are your opinions and experiences with this? Thanks.

They should just provide you a copy of the PPI they have in hand now.

Have the selling dealer contact the prospective buyer whose financing fell through and ask if he'd be willing to share the report with you for certain con$ideration. The info in the report rightly belongs to the individual who commissioned the PPI.

It might be that neither the seller nor the inspector are able to share the report with a third party, e.g., another potential buyer. I think, in the absence of an agreement otherwise, the "owner" of the PPI is the person who commissioned it, not the seller or the shop that conducted the inspection. That was the approach taken by FMos when I contacted them about doing a PPI a few years ago regarding a car that I was considering. FMoS made it clear that the PPI would be "mine" and would not be shared with the seller or anyone other than me. Perhaps PPI's are more typically "co-owned" and can be shared, as you suggest, but that was not my experience. As it turned out, I didn't pursue the car or require the PPI. Jon

To clarify, the selling dealer does not have the ppi.

Mike-good idea. I would feel more comfortable involving the other buyer if possible and letting them recoup some cash.

Call the shop that did the other ppi that you're also considering and talk to them about what they know. ALSO, ask them to call the party who commissioned the ppi and let them know that you're willing to pay a portion of it for the info.

At this point it's a sunk cost to the previous party but it's also ethical and courteous to pay your share of the ppi if you're getting access to that information.

Where is the car in the country?

I called the selling dealer and he is reaching out to the person to see if he will supply the ppi. I know I would do it so we'll see how it turns out. The people who did the ppi did supply a little info about the car so if anyone here wants to know please send me $100.
    Thanks for your responses.

Not theirs to give away. It belongs to the person who commissioned it.

Understood but often the seller gets a copy and right, wrong or indifferent it gets shared.

I certainly respect and agree that it would be nice for the OP to offset some of the PPI owner's cost.

If you are speaking of the seller I have never known one to get a copy. The only person I ever communicate my finding to is the buyer. They ask and I refer them to my customer. Never seen one hand over a copy of something he just paid for and it certainly is not in his interest to do so. Besides, the seller is usually less than enthusiastic to hand over that piece of news.

I was helping a friend vet a 355 in TX and the car had a PPI done by a very reputable shop. The seller had a copy. How they obtained it is unknown to me and they did not provide us a copy until we arrived.

I know of one other too.

I know other examples when the findings of a PPI are discussed in detail with the seller as the potential buyer want items fixed or price reduced.

    Just passing along my experience.

I appreciate all of you sharing your experience. My thought is that I might as well ask. He may be like me and be happy to help someone else out, he may be happy to get some of his money back or he may not care at all and all of those responses are his prerogative. I am not asking the shop that did the ppi for any info because it won't be complete anyway and I sincerely feel that people deserve to be paid for what they do and $600 to check a $150k car is not really an issue. The shop did make a few comments to the seller about clutch wear and overall condition and that is fine, but they definitely did not give them a copy because it is not theirs to give and I think we all can agree with that.

I will drop my price to $50 for any Fchatter who wants to know the clutch wear. (Sorry, yes this is sarcasm)!
