Let's keep 'em coming, Mr. Niles.

How about I raise you with this, Sir:
Taken couple of years ago in Monterey, while a friend (his car) and I were waiting for very tasty lunch to get served. Too bad the restaurant (Persian Grill) didn't survive.

Here are the Le Mans qualifying results:

    1963 250GTO, 12th on grid, Abate / Tavano, 4:05.500
    1971 365GTB/4, 33rd on grid, Grossman / Chinetti, Jr., 4:21.300
    1973 365GTB/4, 23rd on grid, Ballot-Léna / Elford, 4:16.200

So the 250GTO was considerably faster as I expected.
    Pete
ps: The direct side view of the Daytona (road version) is absolutely stunning and IMO its best angle :)

That was a backwards grid for that days racing, so the faster the car the lower down the grid!

Only joking, bet I got you going for a second though!

The Grossman / Chinetti Jr car in 71 was not a full group 4 car, but a street car modified by Chinetti for racing. By 72 the track was considerably modified since 63 with the Ford Chicane (added by 71 and the Porsche curves (added in 72) so lap times would not be comparable.

Thanks. I did wonder about track modifications, especially because Hales found the Comp Daytona faster in the Mason book, but only by a couple of seconds.

Interestingly I discovered that Corvettes out qualified Daytonas ... wtf! :(

Qualifying is one thing the race is another and the Daytona dominated the GT class results in 72 taking the 1st five places. I would imagine that most teams were happy enough with a time to get them in the race race than worrying about qualifying position?

The track was not the same in 1963, 1971 and 1973, chicane Ford, Maison Blanche etc.

Came across a bunch of Daytona photos, prints, slides and scans. Two of the scans shown here. I took these at a local Ferrari club meet at Bridgehampton in 1983. Not easily seen, but this one had exhaust pipes coming out on sides under doors. Most likely modified by the owner.
