Student work from my class last semester featured on cardesignnews.com today.

    BEOMSEOK KIM
Porsche has embraced new paths in terms of the type of vehicles it offers but in many ways, is still quite beholden to the classic mystique of the early 911. Enter Beomseok Kim's vision of a Porsche Le Mans race car for the Michelin Design Challenge: a theme that makes a very minimal nod to Porsche's heritage, then proceeds to overturn the apple cart and stomp on it. In a way, this model may remind of BMW's Next 100 concept, in that it seems intent on exploring how far a brand's DNA can be stretched before it snaps. I can see diehard Porsche enthusisasts being utterly confused and frustrated by Kim's design, while those who revel in breaking the rules will view it as a breath of fresh air.

Aside from the boldness of his design direction, his theme is also notable for its novel execution. Hexagonal surface details were 3D printed, inlaid into the clay surface, and then painted as one - an ambitious choice that could easily have backfired with a simple change in room temperature.

While Kim's colour choice is obviously Gulf-inspired, the chiselled rocker panel break yields a striking contrast to the car's simple, organic form. White tyre rubber reminds us of yet another design convention few of us are willing to challenge, while at the same time making reference to the Michelin Man. This concept underlines that those who make waves rarely play it safe. To that end, Kim's theme should encourage others to take a chance and resist the urge to be afraid of the outcome.

From that vantage point it has a more plumpy line which makes it look economy. The turntable was higher than ground level by more than a foot.

But I would echo John and say that the surfacing and the proportions in 3D give it more of an Audi A7 look. See the 3/4 view below which shows part of that area.

As an aside, it has a hatch back trunk. :)

I've always believed that one should never model one's concept cars out of wax.
The auto show lights are a *****...

    some really outstanding work -

quite like the black and white coupe (@8:08) with what looks to be a Corvette badge but would make a great Elise replacement, the Renault "Twizzy" like car, and the Acura NSX(?),
but the car at the top of the video was exceptional.

    great show -

Added to my inventory of design studio art today with some great original Chrysler pieces - What do you think of these designs?

    1) 1970 dated sketch of a Dodge Challenger Concept by Ric Carrel (noted for his work on the Charger)

    2) 1972 concept drawing of a 3 passenger car based pickup (possibly based on the Charger or Satellite). Features a removable rear hatch cover over the pick up bed. Interesting concept that makes sense - it somewhat surprises me that these types of small car based pickups never took off in North America

    3) Undated 1970s era design drawing of a Plymouth Barracuda. Signed by John Samsen.

I was looking at a book on Pontiac show cars and there's two in there that were built as toys for Bill Mitchell, one the Banshee, the other the Pegasus, both with garish candyapple red metalflake, gold pinstriping, red upholstery. Yet the official GM concept cars of the time were more restrained, often silver, no pinstriping, no gold plating. Were the candy apple metalflake cars his "dark side" and were employees almost embarrassed to be working on them? I know he smashed one of them up at Elkhart Lake and it was rebuilt--what other crazy things did he do with them (I saw him racing once on Woodward, but it was in an SSK customized to look like an SSKL)

Oh yeah, it's art all right. :)

Hey, there are some sketches in there from Ken Okuyama, the designer of the Enzo. Who knew? I didn't know. :)

Favorite car commercials? Describe them or post a link. One I remember clearly is the first commercial ever done by Lexus, where they were balancing a nickel or quarter on its edge on the engine while it was running. Very impressive.

Remember the first commercials for the Nissan's Infiniti?

Never showed the car, only scenes from nature. Lot of flack for that.

Lexus' were great... a Japanese Mercedes.

What do you guys think of the Jaguar i Pace?

The proportions look good and the details are nice and the interior looks really cool but...

Where is the "Jaguar-ness" in the design? I can't find one element that relates to that.

Design can evolve but if it's totally unrelated to what came before it looses the connection to the foundation of the brand. And then has to stand on its own. And Jaguar has a great brand foundation to build off of.

    Thoughts?
