Yes it was there first; but the Government didn't restrict development around it and as a result it is now past its use by date. We have a duplicated airport at Avalon, there is no need for one so close to the city.

 

It is obviously the "fault" of Government in some form; but now it is what it is. We are not talking about noise complaints or something trivial here Simon. One day there will be a catastrophic accident and that is not an "if", it's just a matter of when.

Lets not forget who owns it (and Avalon) either - Lindsay Fox. If it closes he owns the other airport and he will make another fortune developing the land at Essendon.
No doubt he will wrangle a great compensation deal from the tax payer as well.

 

I would have thought the land value for housing lots would far exceed ROI valuation based on operating the airport.

Maybe he just like planes?

 

btw King Air and similar charter aircraft take off daily from Sydney airport, over densely populated suburbs if a northerly wind is blowing.

Then there's the big cargo planes, usually very heavy and hard worked...

 

Its a Federal Government registered airport and requires literally a parliamentary decision to sell it, and as its part of the national infrastructure it will stay as an airport.
That is why Bankstown is still an airport. All this I believe came about years ago because of the debacle over selling Hoxton park

 

So regarding all the airports in all the capital cities everywhere...what is the solution...build 'em like they did in Hong Kong.....reclaim a pile of ocean?

The airport had been there since the 1920s.

There wouldn't be a person alive who was in the area before the airport.

No one forced anyone to buy a house there, or open a business there.

I live within a stones throw from Parafield airport (which is probably busier than Essendon) and I have never felt unsafe with the aircraft flying over constantly.
Maybe I'm just not a drama queen.

the airports' situations is the classic nimby situation - no one wants an airport near them, no one wants to drive more than an hour to the airport and everyone wants to live close to the city - something has to give. Don't blame governments - I'm sure if the government of the time had tried to put a 20km ring of 'no development' around Essendon, people would have screamed blue murder about 'land shortages'; and if it's forced to close now, people will scream about the lack of landing areas...

The sooner ALL religions have their special status and tax exemptions removed, the better.
