There were 4 Red RHD LP400 delivered new to Australia: 1120206, 1120260, 1120262, 1120272. There was also another Gold LP400 #1120278 (Oro Sahara) that was soon repainted Red, and modified to S specs later on. #1120244 was also delivered new to Australia and didn't have time to change color back then, I think, as it was burned down at a very early stage of its life. I'm desperately looking for some (color) photos of that particular car.
Unfortunately I have not worked on a QV engine, so I do not have any flow bench data. However I would welcome the opportunity. Based on some modeling, I would expect it to need a 70mm ITB assuming you are running a QV FI configuration and are targeting 455 hp or 68 mm for 422 hp. Take the numbers with a grain of salt though, I have not confirmed this calculation yet. Cheers Jim
Hi Victor The attached photo has always been a mystery to me. It was posted somewhere [so not my photo] and shows a RHD LP400 that has been burnt out. All I know is that this was at somewhere called "Banks Service Station". I had always assumed that this was in the UK because the car is RHD, but it could be in Australia, I suppose. Is this the car you are looking for, as I am unaware of any other RHD LP400 that was burnt out. [Sorry if the paint colour is...a bit singed]. Robert Image Unavailable, Please Login
That's what I was thinking. Flat roof, front wheel-arch spat with low-profile wheel in evidence, and space-saver from a later variant, all suggest that this is a post-LP400 variant.
I see what looks like a Lotus Europa next to the Countach, so could it be these folks in the UK? Welcome to Europa Engineering
Yes indeed, it's later Countach variant. Also, Europa Engineering's address is Banks Service Station... which was the caption of that photo. Nice try, Robert. And thank you Joe for your reply and the link that gives us the UK location with no doubt. 1120244 was (is?) still in Australia under restoration.
So..I called Europa here in the U.K. They were really helpful. There was a fire, but not at Banks Services Station. It was nearby at a garage owned privately by someone they knew who owned a Countach and an Aston Martin, amongst other cars. Back the Europa dealt with a wider range of cars. They can't remember anything about the Countach, even the colour. It was over twenty years ago, and they only knew about it through it being a local story. No idea which car this is or was, as back then it does not look salvageable! Anyone know any more. Just out of interest?
Hello -- can anybody post a picture of the spare wheel/tire(s) on the LP400, 400S, 5000S, etc. vehicles? How many variants are there? Any detailed pictures would help - like is there a wheel sticker on the wheels?
In a nutshell, the LP400 had essentially a full-size front wheel as spare (below), all subsequent variants had the skinny space-saver with stickers that matched the wheel stickers: Campagnolo > Ruote O.Z Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thanks, and there were two versions of the skinny type, one magnesium (Campagnolo) and one Route OZ, correct? Or were there more options or variants?
I'm not sure what metal type the spare wheels were made of. Generally they were painted the color of the wheels, but I noticed towards the end of the Countach run (I forget which variants), some spare spare wheels came from the factory painted black.
Incorrect. Rod Stewart brought the car to the USA as a RHD car, and used it here thus, even after Mardikian converted it. The image Marcello posted http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/145244189-post23240.html was taken in Beverly Hills and shows it as RHD car California-registered "RIVA"
Rod Stewart arriving at a recording studio in Hollywood in the still-RHD 1120262 after he had allowed Mardikian to modify it a bit. According to Stewart himself in an article, he originally saw & purchased the RHD LP400 whilst on tour in Australia, took it back to the UK, then to the USA. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hello Ian, Sure, LP400 #1120262 was ordered by Australian Lamborghini importer Tony De Fina and ready in the factory for shipping on June 14th 1977. This Countach was indeed bought by Rockin' Rod in Australia who first brought it to the UK and then to California soon after, as shown and explained by Joe and Marcello. Here are some more pics of that car at different stages of its life: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Thank you for a great set of period photographs of the car as owned by Mr Stewart. I confess to previously seeing a photograph of the car configured in RHD with Mardikan mods, but had not remembered, as noted with my incorrect reference to RHD to LHD factory conversion. I have read that the car now resides in Germany and has been returned to original spec.
There were only 2 Countach modified to "Targa S" by Giacobone and Mardikian companies (Executive Coachcraft & Trend Imports): #1120134 in 1980 and #1120262 in 1984. Yes, #1120262 has now been restored to its LP400 guise and still LHD. The other one, #1120134 was originally painted blue with white interior when owned by some Middle-Eastern Prince... then brought to the USA (actually modified and registered in Panama and back to the USA soon after) and sold to a Dr. from Orange County. During the mid-1980s Alpine Electronics bought this special Countach, got the interior redone in red, also removed the front spoiler, and used it as their "Alpine show-car". Later, #1120134 moved to several US states to eventually be stolen. It reappeared in Italy in the 1990s and was sold to Germany where it was last seen painted black (still with red interior). I've been told the car was still there some years ago. No idea if it has been restored or gone somewhere else... Nope. That one has clear blinkers and brighter dashboard and inner mounts (from the dashboard up to the roof inside). I don't know what was this car's VIN. Still searching...
Fascinating because its a Monospecchio LP400 LP400S, so it should not have a white dash or pillar panels. Anyway, having owned 1120056, 1120110 & 1120192, another LP400 which I find fascinating is the first Alpine poster car, 1120300, reputedly the last LP400 built. I tracked it down, and, my wife and I paid it a visit last year at what I can only describe as a James Bond movie-style lair up in the hills of a Hawaiian Island http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/144503391-post22299.html I'd be lying if I said I didn't care to own this particular LP400.
