Right, found some stats. Total F430 tub weighs 165.4kg, including engine cradle, front and rear sub frames, the lot. 458 reduced weight by about 25%, to around 130kg, while strengthening stiffness. From the very nice original 12C McLaren sales book I was given when I bought one, the carbon tub weighs 75kg, but that is without front and rear (aluminium) sub frames. Looks to me like the total advantage is less than 50kg.

This does not factor in Ferrari's aluminum technology which I am sure is getting lighter and stronger based on technological advances in metallurgy as well as all manner of welding and bonding technologies etc

Since when do pure technology or speed sell good numbers of cars? I don't see Ultima or Radical beating Mac, Ferrari or Lambo in sales. We buy these overpriced vehicle's because of how they make us feel. Emotion is very tough to manufacture. I could care less about the 720s vs the 812 regardless if it's a better or faster car. I don't see me buying one. I don't crave it.

    I fully agree.

I am already tying to figure out how to explain to my wife why I "need" an 812. And I obviously cannot sell the other 2 Ferrari's.

Truth is, there is no "need". Only "want", driven by emotion. Not frame materials.

IMHO in the current state-of-the-art the CF tub has an advantage for open-top cars because it maintains the same stiffness without a closed body; on the other hand the aluminium construction can be really efficient for a berlinetta.
I think one of the issues with McLaren is that they do not make the best of what they have (although they are clearly improving); in spite of its most advanced technology the MP4/12C was left behind the 458 until it could rely on the evolutions and added power of the 650S, and today to (marginally) outperform the 488 GTB they need the special edition 675LT.

Mclaren 720S will eat the 488 alive. I've seen it in person. You will see the head to head on this in the coming months after the Geneva reveal.

Ferrari now has a car that will be in production 4 more years and is bested by Mclaren in that price range. By time Ferrari unveils 488 successor Mclaren will be out with 720S successor. Their release cycles are faster.

Of course aesthetics and brand play into many people's purchases but Mclaren is making converts fast with this car

In Europe the 675LT was way more expensive than the 488, if the 720S will be priced in the price range of the 488 it will indeed be a bargain (but I doubt it to be honest, the 650S is already more expensive than the 488).
And needing a carbon fiber tub and 50 more hp to get ahead kind of confirms my feeling they need more than Ferrari to achieve their results; more power, more technology, and discounting their prices?

One major factor for some is the McLaren depreciation curve thanks to that faster release cycle... AKA drops off the cliff especially in the USA. I had a 675LT...

As promised I'm posting below the evolution of Ferrari production GT road cars/2 seats/V12 front engines, since the 166 Inter in 1949 until the 812 Superfast 2017. Have not been included the models which fulfill the criteria but were exclusively for racing.

For anyone which would like to have copies of all the evolution pictures, they'll be attached to the following post in five individual PDF's.

Try to order a 720 after the reveal. Wait times are Ferrari comparable now. Because of the dramatic styling and performance the demand may be greater and depreciation not quite as rapid. Just a guess after seeing this car. Far more exotic than 488 IMHO

In mainland Europe the 675lt was at it's launch well over €100K a nicely specced 488. Even the 650s was a good €50k more expensive. Considering that curve, I expect the 720S to be in 812 league. No thank you!

$200k over in Australia against the 488

Again having felt the McLaren $100k depreciation (even after buying it SUPER well) within 18 months I am not in the mood for probably double that on the 720S if bought new.

    Thanks, great work.
Just a question - isn't the picture labelled as 275 GTB actually a 275 GTC?

    No.
Correct designation is 275 GTB Speciale, it is chassis #06701.
