What is the best battery replacement that permits the longest storage time without the battery tender? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
You might look into the Braille batteries. That's what I'm getting ready to install in my car. The 458 has quite a bit of parasitic current draw. In the 360, I used a smaller battery and was able to leave the car sitting for weeks and even months with no problem. Exact same battery in my 458 is marginal after 5 to 6 days. I'm actually retrofitting my 458 with a 360 kill switch on account of it. Ray
Don't get hung up too much on brand names. In the US, with few exceptions, there are three battery manufacturers. Exide, East Penn and Johnson Controls. Braille batteries, I believe, are made by East Penn. They are essentially a rebranded Deka battery. At least true for their AGM and conventional batteries. IMO, the best automotive battery for modern cars that all have some degree of parasitic current draw, are the class of batteries called AGM batteries. Absorbed Glass Mat. The AGM batteries are more forgiving to discharge cycles than the traditional flooded acid cell batteries. Some people will advocate lithium ion batteries ... I would not. Expensive and fire hazard. I know Braille is promoting these, but other than the weight savings, I personally believe the fire hazard negates other advertised benefits. There are many AGM choices. I have used Interstate and Optima and like them both. I have a 360 and from what I hear, the 458 has a higher parasitic current draw. But in all honesty, if the parasitic current draw depletes a battery in less than 3 to 4 weeks, check out why. I wrote a paper some time back on the subject of parasitic current draw. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/technical-q/507220-parasitic-current-draw-batteries-battery-tenders.html Steve
Excellent paper, thanks! Right on the money, and good insight into the difference between older cars and newer ones. I had a 360 and now have a 458, and the current draw is quite different. If you don't have a tender on your 458, it will go dead in ~ 6 days. I too thought it strange, but it even tells you in the owner's manual to put a charger/tender if the car will sit for more than a week. The real strange thing is that we accept this, something that we would not accept on an econobox.
Ray, thanks for the info and suggestions. I've learned that the alarm system may be the culprit with the battery drain. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Steve, thanks and appreciate the reply and sharing your paper. Very informative. I'm looking into AGM batteries thanks to you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Just an FYI, something to check on ... the Odyssey batteries are made by EnerSys. The DieHard Platinum batteries are also EnerSys, or they were when I last researched this. Everything I have found supports Odyssey is an excellent AGM battery. But like all batteries, it pays to see if the same battery, different brand name, is available. For your size and form factor, check specs, price and warranty. Steve Edited. I am feeling dumb. I don't believe DieHard has the Platinum series anymore. Not sure then what battery might be same as Odyssey.
Steve, thanks and I'll look into options as well. Appreciate the supportive input on Odyssey batteries. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hi have just installed a new battery as there were constant errors coming from the regular old battery. Does the battery need some kind of special installation or coding. 70AH, 760a. specifications. hope this is right
Yup, the Diehard AGMs at Sears switched vendors a year or two ago....from the pictures, specs and dimensions, they appear to be made by East Penn. East Penn also manufactures the Duracell brand, which are sold at Sams Club and Batteries Plus stores.
