Whether or not it's a launch edition, just as you mentioned, the demand will certainly outweigh the supply within the first 18 months of this car.

And henceforth it will depreciate moderately like most supercars.
I've even heard rumors about how upcoming LE models will now be given to customers based on history with McLaren dealers ala Ferrari,

Again, all purely speculation but it would seem that moving forward this way would make sense and control the depreciation factors that scared many potential buyers away before

Make no mistake however, McLaren will be selling the 720s rather aggressively within the next 2 years to assert their position in this segment, the history with McLaren for potential allocations with limited edition models will come later I suppose... might not be such a had idea to get a LT now then...

I don't buy it in the states. They are still too small to not sell a car to someone who wants to buy one.

"Gee I'd like to sell you this new car but you need to buy another car first. Then I'll put you on the list".

Never happen with McLaren in the US on a normal production car.

As mentioned above, I assume this will apply to later LE models not normal production models and only once McLaren build their brand that little bit more.... And when I say later LE models I mean cars within the next 2-3 years which is a fair ways to go, remember McLaren have done this much in only 6 years, I think they're only going upwards from now...

History with Mclaren has shown that these cars depreciate. A year old 650s (2016 model) now can be seen on the market for 210k asking. So do a little back and forth and likely you can get the car for 200k. This is for a year old 330k sticker car. 570s are now well below sticker for less than a year car as well and these were supposed to hold value better. They are but not that much better.

I have no doubt the 720 will be amazing. I will absolutely own one. I love what Mclaren is doing. I do have some doubt that it will not depreciate. Im quite certain that it will. the Lambo Performante, the upcoming 488 Speciale (or whatever its called) will all be worthy rivals to the 720 which will help keep prices in check.

My dilemma right now is do I get a year old 650s now and drive it for a year and then upgrade to a year old 720 or just wait and get a brand new 720 and avoid further depreciation on the 650s. Having a hard time deciding.

Call the dealers in FL they have a bunch and will unload about $215 (new).

Also here are a few other listings (NEW) and rest assured if you have cash you can name you price.

If purchased within the past year it likely wasn't sold at MSRP anyway so you can't accurately represent the depreciation that way.

There are four others in the 219-221k range. This is asking price- not selling price

I hate depreciation as much as the next guy but I buy stocks and bonds for that, which more than pays for whatever depreciation.

I buy my cars to drive and enjoy. many (especially fcar owners) buy them for status symbols or pile all their savings into one and are freaked out it may drop 50 or even 100k.

If that bothers you then you probably shouldn't buy any of these cars.

    don't feed the trolls

Yeah - I don't disagree with you about depreciation but if you can minimize it, why not. More money for the next car.

I agree with you. These are toys and toys aren't meant to be investments. They are what you do with the money you make from your investments.

If we looked at life this way we would never marry. :)

No one on their death bed ever said: "Gee, I'm so glad now I never bought that McLaren."

I bought my 2015 650s Spider brand new with 380 dealer miles in July 2015 for $225k

I don't know how it happened, but it did. Sticker was $328k

Illustrates my my point exactly - most recent buyers haven't lost nearly as much real value as is being suggested by showing evidence of current pricing.

We can also take this discussion a step further and look at the current market pricing for 570 models which has held up quite well and determine that McLaren's pricing issues are resolving themselves as the brand grows and the products improve.

On the topic of the 720S, I've finalised my launch edition order in white and the full
Performance package. My down payment has been processed and I've been told that delivery would be in June this year. Looking forward to a Nurburgring lap time, I don't see it being any slower than the Huracan performante.

Thank you... the whole depreciation thing is far too overblown on McLaren... it happens to every car and if you want to have the newest and latest, be prepared to pay MSRP and take the depreciation like the bigshot you want to be...

I completely understand buying used cars makes plenty of financial sense (I always buy used... hate paying sticker) but everybody has been bashing McLaren like they're the only cars who drop in value after driving them

When the W222 S-Class came out and wiped out the opposition no one said 'oh wow that car is gonna drop like a rock'

The whole depreciation thing has to be dropped, McLaren deserve much more credit for pulling this off in 6 years and at the end of the day, Ferrari will raise their game as well as Lambo so us, the consumers, are the real winners
